after changing the battery and gently push back on the lens it should automatically close if not then check around it it must be something stuck in between it
Try to remove the rechargeable battery and use a battery of the same
type but an alkaline like the energizer. Sometime rechargeable battery
malfunctions that it seems fully charged but actually is not. If the
camera continue to power on when you replace the battery it simply means
that your problem is in the battery.
If you try turning on the camera with the lens cap on, you may get zoom error. Ensure that you are removing the lens cap before turning on the camera.
If the autofocus ring is held while taking the picture, or operating the lens this will also cause the Zoom error message coming up.
If that is not the problem, then the lens has troubles extending. This may happen because of dust stuck in lens mechanism, or because of a mechanical fault concerning the lens. Any cause preventing lens from full extention or retraction will trigger zoom error.

it sounds like the lens barrel is out out alignment. Possible the barrel was stuck while it was extended. There is a sensor on the lens barrel asemmbly that must be in the correct position after the camera is turned off. If this doesn't happen then you will get this message..at least this is what I have experienced in my repairs on this camera
