The closed captioning is on. If the source is OTA, you can turn it off with the remote (a button marked CC, press it until it reads CC OFF) or the On-screen Display (probably Options or Tools). This also applies to some satellite or cable systems. With satellite and some cable boxes, the captions can also be controlled by the box. The remote for the box may have a CC button. Otherwise, you'll need to go through the menus to turn it off. (I know with Dish Network boxes, if the system is set to single (rather than dual) mode, both TVs will show the captions if it is enabled.
Similarly, DVDs, VCRs, and Blu-ray inputs may have their own captions and you might need to see the remote (or menus) for that device.
