SONY PCV-rx462ds won't power up after 3 y of inactivity

Hi, I took my very old computer (PCV-RX462DS) from my old apartment and moved it to a different city where I now live. I wanted to copy all my old files, reinstall a system and give to my cousin who needs a computer just to browse internet.
To my surprise the computer won't power up: no lights, no sound - nothing. The only thing that I noticed is that when I plug it into the wall socket, a respective led lights up on the ethernet hub the computer is plugged into. But that's it. I tried to move the computer with care but who knows what happened. The last time I switched it on was probably 3 years ago.

Please advise.

Thank you!

CD drive not working

Based on your indication the CD drive is clean, and you know the cables are attached to it, inside the computer. (Flat ribbon IDE interface cable, and 4-pin Molex connector power cable)

1.Go to Device Manager

Left-click on Start. Right-click on My Computer. Go down, and Left-click on Properties. Left-click on the Hardware tab. Go down, and Left-click on Device Manager.

Left-click on the + sign to the left of, DVD/CD-ROM drives.
Right-click right on the name of the CD drive.

(Example: Lite On DVDRW LH-20A1P.
eMachines Support indicates the T5212 has a DVD burner drive, and a CD drive. Right-click on the CD drive name))

In the drop down list, Left-click on Properties.
Left-click on the Driver tab
Go below, and Left-click on the Update Driver 'button'. Now go below, and Left-click on OK.

Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen.
Shut your computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)

Do Not Restart. We need a 'Hard Shut Down'.
Wait 1 minute, turn your computer on.

Still doesn't work?
Let's play hard ball.

2.Go back to Device Manager. Left-click on the + sign to the left of DVD/CD-ROM drives. Right-click on the name of the CD drive. Left-click on Properties. Left-click on the Driver tab.
This time go down, and Left-click on the Uninstall 'button'. Go below, and Left-click on OK

There will be a Microsoft 'squawk box' that comes up. "Warning you are about to uninstall this device"
Left-click on OK. (It IS okay!)

Close all windows. Shut down your computer normally. (Again, we need a 'Hard Shut Down'. To Restart a computer is known as a 'Soft Shut Down')

Wait 1 minute. Turn your computer on.
After Windows loads all the way, and all of your Start Menu programs have loaded, you should see a pop-up out of your system tray. (Bottom of Windows desktop screen)

"Found New Hardware", and perhaps another one, "Found XYZ CD drive". (XYZ = the CD drive name)

No still?

The driver for your CD drive, is located within the Windows XP operating system on your computer.
If your CD drive does not work now, I suggest it has failed.

Drives such as Optical drives, and Harddrives, are mechanical devices. Their 'Lifespan', is rated in so many hours of usage. Your CD drive may be at the end of it's 'Lifespan'.

My cd-rom wont work

The laser lens needs cleaning.
Radio Shack has a CD laser lens cleaner ($13).
It is an audio CD with a row of brushes on it.
Read and follow directions. It does not use chemicals and will not harm your CD drive if not done correctly.

Hi try taking the drive out of the laptop, you may have to unscrew some screws under the drive first .Make sure you have the laptop turned off when doing this. When you have the drive out put it back in firmly then put the screws back in.This may sound stupid but sometimes this is all it takes.

Cd drive

Try having your cd drive cleaned. A cd drive could prevent the cd drive to read the disk properly. The drive noise is normal if the speed of your cd drive is high. Here are some links on how to clean a cd drive:

Here is the link for reducing the speed of the disk (if the sound annoys you):
