Laptop keeps shutting off after few minutes

Try blowing out any dust from around the fan with compressed air. If the fan is turning on and off a lot, this could be normal, depending on your processor, but if the system just shuts down fully and randomly, it would be a heat issue. The CPU is overheating and the failsafe mechanism is to instantly shut your computer down. The only way to avoid this is to raise the CPU shutdown temp in the BIOS settings, or if you can access the CPU, remove it and apply new, quality thermal grease. Also, ensure the fan is operating correctly during use and dont block any air intake or exhaust ports.

There can be many reasons of unexpected shut down of your system.Below are some remedies to solve it

Run an anti-spy ware and anti-virus utility to make sure that the shutdowns aren't being caused by a malicious program. If the shutdowns are infrequent, install a CPU temperature monitor utility to keep track of the CPU's temperature. If the CPU is overheating, or the shutdowns are frequent, then you will need to troubleshoot your computer's internal components.

Check any recently installed internal components to ensure that they are properly connected to the computer's motherboard. Make sure any new expansion cards or memory modules are securely seated in their slots, and ensure that the power and data cables are properly connected to any new drives.

Check for large dust buildups on your CPU fan. If the fan isn't effectively cooling your CPU, the overheating CPU will cause your computer to power off. Carefully pick away large pieces of dust with your fingers, and then spray the CPU fan with a can of compressed air to remove the rest of the dust.

Reapply the heat sink compound between the CPU and heat sink if the computer continues to turn off unexpectedly. Heat sink compound is a pasty substance that fills the space between the heat sink and processor, which increases the heat sink's ability to absorb heat from the CPU. But worn heat sink compound won't properly redirect heat away from the CPU. Power down your computer, disconnect its power cables and open the case. Unplug the CPU fan's power cable from the motherboard, remove the heat sink and fan combination from the CPU, and then apply the heat sink compound to the CPU--refer to your product manuals for details on reapplying heat sink compound.

You could have a problem with your OS, it could be viruses, or other things.

It could also be a force shut down by your motherboard. Before you replace the motherboard, check to see if you computer might be over heating. Touch the heatsink on your CPU/Motherboard. Feel if it is too Hot or Cold. You only want it to be warm.

If you are getting through the bios before it shuts down, you may want to make sure that the CPU cooling fan is working and that there is plenty of airflow around the CPU heat sink. Make sure the reset and power buttons are working properly as well. Check that all of your RAM modules and any add on cards are seated properly as well.

As a temporary measure, taking the side panel off the dell 5150c stopped it from shutting down, so in my case it was clearly a heat problem, as suggested by previous the poster. The following instructions assume you're comfortable replacing computer hardware components - do at your own risk!

The solution is to buy an 'air duster' and some thermal compound for the CPU heat sink. If your CPU fan doesn't sound healthy (mine didn't), also buy a new one (ca. £20 on ebay: search for G9474 ).

Clean out dust from the heat sink with air duster. Remove the fan, and clean or replace (recommended). Also clean the grill in front of the fan. Clean off old thermal compound from the CPU / heat sink and replace with a thin layer of fresh compound. Replace heat sink and side panel and you're done.

Could be hardware or software problems, IF its hardware issue the only problem makes this if the Cpu fan doesnot work, so the Cpu gets hot and then it shutdown in order not to be damaged. but mostly its software issue that remeber if you installed any program before this is happen, and try to stop shutdown by this command, if you did this and this stop shutting down your laptop this is absolutley software problems or programs conflict:
hit Start, then Run , then type this : shutdown -a
this will stop your shutdown if it works, try to uninstall the last programs causes this issue,if it doesnot let you use safe mode command.

It sounds as if the motherboard is having a temperature safety shutdown. This occurs when the temperature of the CPU exceeds a certain limit.

First off: Please check your CPU fan, power supply fan, and graphics card fan(if you have a gfx card) that they are working. If not, I would highly recommend replacing the fans or at least cleaning them and attempting to get them started by rotating them manually.

Please enter your BIOS (See Here for instructions) and navigate to "PC Health Status" - check the entry for the CPU temperature. While in the BIOS there is little strain on the system, but if the temperature is above 40 degrees Celsius in this state it may be prudent to check the fan setting. Also, check if there is a CPU Fan fail warning/CPU warning temperature - on average the limit should not exceed 60-65 degrees Celsius, max. Set any Fan speed or mode settings to maximum if able.

Try again.

If problem persists, and you are sure the temperature is not too high and/or the CPU fan is working, it may be the power supply itself. It is possible for the power supply to shut itself off in extreme cases such as when a power supply's fan stops working, and the temperature of the power supply rises to an unsafe level. Sometimes the fan will work initially but quit after a certain time. The fan requires replacement if this is the case.

Let the computer sit for a while and check to make sure it is at or near room temperature. Attempt to restart the installation process. When the power is cut, feel where the power supply meets the case to check whether or not it is particularly hot.

Replacement of the power supply's fan should solve that problem. I recommend taking it to a repair shop.

If that is not the problem, a last resort is that the harddrive is overheating and causing a system crash. With the case open, start the computer (mindful to be careful and always touch a large metal object such as the computer case itself before getting your hands near any components to prevent static damage), and wait for it to crash. Place your hand gently on the harddrive. If it is very warm or hot to the touch, most likely the harddrive's actuator arm, circitry, or data plate is malfunctioning and the drive should either be taken to be repaired or replaced.

If none of the components in your computer are particularly hot, please come back with more information on your computer, such as the parts, what you are cd you are booting, any new hardware, etc.

There could be any number of reasons for this to happen. However, the most likey reason - assuming that it runs for a bit, and then shuts down - is that the heatsink/fan on the CPU is not working, or not installed properly. Once the CPU heats up to a certain point, it will shut down to prevent damage. Perhaps the CPU fan as gone bad, or is completely clogged with dust.
