Our Sanyo TV is approximately 12-15 years old. For the past few weeks we have noticed on three different channels a black rectangular box that appears near the lower half of the screen. Takes up about 1/4 of the screen. When this happens the color dulls on the screen (background, people, objects etc) almost looks close to black and white. When we change the channel and then go back to the 'problem' channel, it looks normal but within a few seconds back to the same problem. This doesn't occur all day. For example we will watch a program mid afternoon, the problem appears for a few hours but later in the evening on the same channels everything looks normal. It seems to be off and on. We thought maybe there was a problem with the tv stations but we checked our other tv and there are no problems with it. Is the TV starting to wear out? Anything we can do to fix it?
Turn off your CC or closed caption
I too had a black square appear on my tv which is 10 years old and I figured it was old and just broken, so I got another tv and it had the same square on it as well...I read this and turned off the closed caption which I suspect my 2 year old turned on, and it worked again!
I had the same problem with my Toshiba and this solution worked. Saved me a bunch of money replacing my older TV.

I checked and the closed caption was turned off. Noticed two new problems this morning. On one channel there was a white fuzziness across the screen, moving downward, lasted maybe 5 seconds. Also this afternoon on two channels the screen was flickering which is also new.
I have a Magnavox MT1901 19" TV. Closed Caption is on. I can get into the menu "screens" but I am NOT seeing an option to turn CC off. Please help.

I have the same issue with my Sanyo... the box has migrated to different channels. I have another Sanyo (same vintage) on the same cable system and it has no issues. 99.9 % of the time it is an emply black rectangle that leaves when any remote button is pushed only to return in seconds. One day it began to place a few nonsense text symbols in the upper left hand corner...
