I have a Minolta Dimage x31. It was using a small 16mb sd card. I bought a 4gb Piny Optima SD card and it just flashes red when used. Nothing will function, can't even trun the camera off whern that card is in it. Is there a maximum size or a special type sd card for this camera?
Many thanks for your solution! I have a similar problem. I recently purchased two 4GB SDHC cards for a Minolta Dimage Z1. They refused to function even after formatting them in the camera (approx. 6years old?).Many thanks for your solution!

The X1 works with MMC and SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it fits into the slot, it is electronically incompatible. You need to use an SD card, 2GB and smaller.
Your camera came out in 2003, before SDHC cards were invented. Chances are, the 4G card you're trying to use is not an SD but an SDHC card and won't work in your camera.
The G500 works with SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller.
The S414 was designed to work with SD cards. Your 4GB card is actually an SDHC card. While it will fit into the slot, it will not work. You need to stay with SD cards, 2GB and smaller.
The Dimage Z3 accept SD cards up to 1GB (Minolta says 512 Mb, and sold it with 16Mb). This camera is 4MP , and uses less memory on card, therefore a 512MB card will be enough for it.
I don't have any first-hand information, but you'll probably be ok as long as you stay under capacities of 2GB. The original SD specification only allowed cards up to 2GB to be compliant with the standard, so I think that pretty much every camera that has an SD slot can handle 2GB capacities.
