You motherboard uses a "Socket A" CPU and therefore has limits to how high you can go.. I would recommend the XP 2200 or 2400+ as a good choice, but you can make your own choice.
if you have the money, I would recommend upgrading your motherboard to a AM2 socket, and then you can upgrade your processor and ram cheaper..
A good AM2 motherboard will run around $80-$220 CAN
yes, it will be safe for your motherboard.. If you are really hesitant, the AMD Athlon (without the XP) are the most compatible. The only thing that you may need to do it buy a better power supply, and make sure you have plenty of fans. Also, make sure the CPU that you buy comes with a heatsink made for it (most will have one included in the box)...
That is why I suggested a new motherboard, as you will find more compatible and readily available CPU's for the newer mobo's.
Should have gone for a motherboard with AM2 or pentium equivilant. You cannot use dual-core in that motherboard, so you are limited to a MAX Pentium III...

Unfotunately, Pentium 3 is pretty much phased out.. Even the Pentium 4's are going out the window...
Any way you can change the motherboard for another one? (you will find cheaper chips as well for a newer motherboard)
I think you were better off with the older motherboard as it uses AMD and has better compatibility...
The motherboard you just bought is pretty much out-dated...
