Icemaker only dispenses crushed ice, not cubes

I have a Frigidaire FRS23H5ASB9 side-by-side. The "cube" button works, but only crushed comes out. "Crushed" button works fine, too, but we usually want cubes. What's causing this? Is it the dispenser or the icemaker?

Same problem with my Kitchenaid SbyS. Have tried the troubleshooting and also made sure the augur motor and selenoid were working. Tried resetting buttons, etc. All that comes out is crushed! HELP please!

  • alamedayahoo May 08, 2008

Kenmore side-by-side icemaker also only dispenses crushed ice no matter what setting you have it on, that is, crushed or cubes. The filter change light came on recently and thought that may have some connection. Planning to change out the filter to see if this resolves the issue but would appreciate any other solutions. Thanks

We have the same problem with our Frigidaire side-by-side - somebody tell us what we can do! We were told it was our power board on the dispenser so we bought a new one to the tune of $121 and installed it, but no cubes...HELP!

  • Anonymous Jul 06, 2008

My Frigidaire side-by-side with icemaker/water dispenser is four years old. I have had four replacement ice makers installed because Frigidaire obviously doesn't know how to make a decent ice maker. I've had other repairs besides having to replace the ice maker. Now the ice maker only makes crushed ice. I had tried moving the lever on the inside of the ice maker to see if that would make cubes and it's done nothing. I had this happen one other time and one day it just seemed to fix itself.

I have complained to Frigidaire and to the dealer who sold me an entire kitchen of Frigidaire Professional Series appliances. These are the worst appliances I have ever owned, Funnily enough, the black lettering that says "Professional Series" has disintigrated off the door of my microwave. The icemaker doesn't work, the stove has opening in the door that allow any spills to fall between the glass in the door and you can't get to the inside of the glass to clean it and the diswasher leaves "grit" all over the dishes in the top rack.

Has anyone else had these problems? Have they been able to rectify the problem? I'm ready to buy all new appliances!

I have a kenmore and I have the same problem.

  • tim_egbert Aug 09, 2008

I've had the same problem with my Kenmore, Fridgidare make, probably since day one. We always left it on cubed, until we had visitors that wanted crushed ice. It took a little effort, but it eventually did go back to cubed if I pushed the button hard enough. We have it in a rental and my new renters just mentioned it to me. I tried to fix it by pressing cubed very hard, but it wasn't working. I noticed the crushed ice button was not completely off when the cubed button was on. I think the toggle switch to the crushed and cubed options on the fridge aren't toggling correctly. I bet it would work if I could open up the panel and see what the buttons are doing. Any one else find a permanent solution to this?

I have a Kenmore side by side refrigerator model number252.52334200 that will only give crushed ice even on the cube button. What can be the matter?

  • Anonymous Oct 07, 2008

yeah same thing ours wil only dispense crushed.

  • pongster Oct 30, 2008

I have the Fridgidaire Gallery side-by-side model GLRS267ZA and one day it only dispensed Crushed ice even though the Cube light was activated. I pulled out the ice container and held down the white plastic bar at the back of the freezer where the rod goes in. As others have already pointed out, apparently if that rod is "above" the white plastic bar that shows through the square hole in the back of the freezer, then cubes come out...otherwise, you get crushed ice.

I had the same problem and called sears to make an appointment and when he said $70.00 diagnostics and then the fee to fix it I said , Never mind ". Then I went on the computer , put in my problem and found this site fixya! Wow I did it I just saved an estimated $100.00 and did it my self. the suburban house wife. I did it !!!! I did the same thing, I went in to the back pulled down and turned the pole to fit over the bar and another walla later I got CUBES! Thank you so much. You made me look good to my hubby.

  • tray5555 Jan 28, 2009

I used the fix held down the plastic peice and put the metal rod in it. It did then give me cubes. Now if I put it on crushed i still get cubes. Unless I pull out the tray then the plastic peice goes back up and i am back to crushed all the time. Anyone else been able to fix it so the switches work?

  • deerejeff11 Apr 17, 2009

My ice maker will only dispense crushed ice. We use cubed most of the time. The crushed button works all the buttons work.

this site is awesome. Fridge has been dispensing crushed ice (what a mess on floor) even if CUBED button is depressed. I fixed this in 30 seconds! The guys comment lower down about "pushing down the white horizontal bar in the square opening behind ice tray' is exactly what worked! Who knew that a chick like me could fix that!

Just wanted to say thanks very much to this site and pongster below for explaining the problem with these refridgerators. We've had this issue for years and even though I can't use the buttons on the fridge, at least I know how to go from cubes to crushed and back.

My LG had the same problem. It turned out to be the 'flap' in the door, it was not shutting causing moisture to build up in the auger and freeze.

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2012

After the ice is dispenses, the flag should shut after a few seconds. Mine was stuck open. I just used my hand to get it unstuck. Working great now!

We ran into this too so following the info on here I took out the bin (on our fridgidaire you have to lift the front and then slide it out). In the back was the "thingy" with 2 little arms that was all frozen over. I emptied out the ice, with a warm cloth removed the ice from the thing in teh back that I could see turns the auger that moves the ice forward and turns the blades to crush. I put some ice from another freezer in to test it and it works! Thanks everyone! Not only did I learn something new, all the men are in awe that when they kiddingly told me to fix it, I DID!

There is an opening next to the auger that dispenses the ice.  In there there is a lever that must move up and down. It actually seats the metal rod on the bottom of the ice maker and controls cube or crushed.  Make sure the lever is down (cube position) when you return the basket to the freezer. I had to hold it down while I slid the rod into the opening. Viola! Cubes again. http://www.applianceblog.com/mainforums/showthread.php?t=783
check it out!  Thanks to Jake!

Thanks - I looked at a lot of comments and tried a lot of options, but yours was the one that worked. I'd add that even though the plunger went up and down as it was supposed to, it actually has to be "resting" in the down position when reinserting the tray. Thanks again!

Just solved my problem with crushed ice being dispensed when cubed is selected. not sure if the fix is long term. but try this....
Remove the ice tray. On the bottom of the ice tray you'll notice a steel rod that actuates a lever to channel cubed ice to become crushed. Note the problem is not here. The problem is at the back of the freezer. The lever that moves this rod from one position to the other must freeze. Reach into the little opening and gently work the white lever up and down until it moves freely. It may help to lower the temperature of the freezer as well. The freezer doesn't have to be on the coldest setting to keep frozen food. Before replacing the ice tray... make sure this works for you by closing the freezer door and going through your selections. Notice the position of the white lever in the back of the freezer each time you switch from cubed to crush and vice versa. Let me know if this worked for ya. email at [email protected]

All the hints were great but I also had to hold the rod up on the tray while holding rod down in the square opening then vwalla............. thanks everyone. CUBES AGAIN

  • debbieashsam Sep 04, 2011

The white lever in the back doesnt move. I tried defrosting the freezer and it still doesnt move. Therefore I'm stuck either having cubed or crushed but not both. Do you know how to fix the white lever that won't move?

  • Pannylane Sep 11, 2011

When you take tray out, there is a plastic white lever through the back end of the freezer. You can put your finger in and pull down the lever. This activates the cube ice, down for cube up for crush. I tested my solenoid, and it is getting power but isn't working, so it is stuck in the cubed position. Fine with me. I did get my wife to push in the ice tray, while I held down the plastic lever. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks! Different make and model (Siemens KA-D) but same mechanism.
It has been driving me crazy for months.
It turns out an ice cube had found its way behind and was blocking the lever.
    Thanks a million!

Yea! I have been without cubes for 2 years. I slid out the tray, found the lever in the back where the rod went in, pulled it down, reinserted the ice tray, and IT WORKED! At first I thought I broke the lever, because I had to hold it down with a knife while I was inserting the tray, but it just must have been stuck. I am soooo happy!

  • Anonymous Oct 18, 2011

I was without cubes for about 1 month. I pulled out the ice tray, found the square opening in back and push it Up/Down. Working like a charm. Super happy and don't have to call a repair man!

I have the frigidaire gallery series and the fix suggested several times above worked. Pull the ice cube tray out and there's a square hole in back. You will see a white plastic thin "bar". I pulled down on that with some decent pressure and it came down. Walla! Full cubes. Thanks for the hint!

I just used the same solution of pulling out the ice tray and then reaching into the square hole and holding the white plastic rod down. Several times it popped back up but finally, it stayed down! I then put my ice tray back in. Hooray! It now works! I have CUBED ice when I have cube selected, and I have crushed when I have it on crushed! I am so grateful for this site! It saved me an appliance service call and who knows what else!!

  • Anonymous Jul 18, 2013

THANK YOU!! I have a Kenmore side-by-side. I always leave the setting on CUBED, however once in a while when I need a large amount of ice at once, I pull out the tray to empty it. But sometimes after replacing the tray, it will begin making crushed even though the setting always stay on CUBED. In the past all I've done is turn the AUGUER a bit and it goes back to CUBED. This is the first time that didn't work! Its been 3 days of crushed ice & scratching my head (okay, I'm a woman!) dreading making a repair call. Finally THIS WORKED! I never noticed the square in the back with the bar...I pushed it down, then up (don't remember!) and it just locked into place! Then I closed the freezer, put a cup to the dispenser & VIOLA! CUBES again!!

FYI, this fix worked for my ice dispenser that was only making cubes (and apparently I'm one of the few who likes crushed!). I just stuck my finger in the small square hole (it's less than 2x2", by the way) and tapped the moving part several times to loosen it up. Now it works like a charm for both. Thanks!! Nice that they dont put that in the manual. I was going to call the repair company....

This problem had plagued my parents for years (since 2004) and I knew it had to be something simple. Thanks! The fix of pulling the ice tray out and pushing the square piece down fixed it... it seemed to have been frozen by a small amount of ice, so I exercised it a few times and now it works great!

In my dispenser, the long rod that is under the bin must be in the UP position for cubes, I just wedged it in that position until I figure out why the control that is in the back stays down regardless of the cubes/crushed selection. Only cubes for now.

My kenmore side by side was only producing crushed ice. From reading TigerWho's solution, I moved the white lever in the back of the freezer. It moved so freely that it fell off. Discovered a cylinder bar with white plastic on the end back there too. Obviously broken, so I stuck a cork in the hole to hold the bar up. Now I get cubes, which is all I want. If we take the whole tray out to fill a cooler for picnics, the cork falls out. Just put it back in.

  • jc45513 Sep 10, 2011

Cutting a wine cork in half allowed me to wedge it in the hole perfectly. I don't care for crushed ice, so this seems a great solution!

A Door behind the ice bin was hung. (not open) If it doesn't close then you get crushed ice all the time. The service man knew when he got ice and it wasn' a clunk sount when he got ice out. He said it has to open to let the cubs to fall though. My cost was $90.00 to find out. [email protected]

It works! Spent an hour this morning trying to fix the crushed only problem with Frigidaire FFHS2622MSF and the owners manual only says to make sure the auger is lined up with the drive. This of course was no help. Read this blog and sure enough I fixed it in 10 seconds. Pull out ice tray, find 2 x 2 hole on back wall of freezer that was behind tray, insert finger in hole, pull down on lever in hole until it snaps into place, return ice tray, test the cube selection, get on with life. Thanks, everybody!

I Don't know if ANYONE is reading this thread...but PROBLEM:
GE Eterna Side by Side. CRUSH ICE ONLY for past 5 years. The lever in the BACK of the fridge is down and moves freely up and down. The bar in the ice bin moves with out problem with manual manipulation. With ice bin IN....the bar is down and only crushed ice. I removed ice bin, and checked and the bar in back doesn't move with crush or cube. is this a bad solenoid? I defrosted freezer recently -- no change.

LOVE this website ! We had the same issue with our side by side Frigidaire which has always been persnickity since we purchased it back in 2003. Since we last had it serviced ( ice jam behind the freezer ) had only been getting crushed ice. My husband suggested I google the problem as I am always praising the wealth of knowledge on line and with google. Low and behold my first hit was this website and the answer worked ! Only caveat I would add is that you need to exert a little force and snap that white lever inside the box ! We now have whole cubes again and don't have to open the freezer for ice every time we need it. Living in Hawaii we go through lots of ice and opening the freezer all of the time likely accelerates our electricity bill.
Thanks to all who posted and the expert advice. I plan to add this website to my favorites and will be a frequent visitor . Mahalo !

I've been dealing with crushed ice for over 2 years only to fix it in less than 60 seconds. I feel like a dope for not having searched for a solution sooner! Thanks!!!

I have had the same problem with my FRS23H5ASB9 intermitently over the past 3 years. It has gotten stuck on "Crush" no matter what setting is selected. A couple of times holding down the "Cube" button for 10-15 seconds has worked. But most times it just suddenly starts dispensing cubes on its own a day, week, or even months later. I have yet to hear of a reason for the problem nor a permanent solution.

Icemaker is on cube but is still crushing ice it seems like it is stuck on crush, the light is on cube.

You have a solenoid switch which switches the dispenser back and forth from crushed to cube. It could be stuck or not working or the parts connecting it could be disconnected or broken. You will have to observe to see if any parts are moving and if any noise is coming from the solenoid
Remove the dispenser cover by gently prying starting at the bottom going round and round a little at a time to prevent from breaking it. When it's off the screws will be exposed to access the other components

Icemaker only dispenses crushed ice

Your selector solenoid is not working. Next to the auger motor there is a selector. You will see a plastic peice in a hole to the left of the auger.....Try to move it up and down. If it won't move it is more than likely frozen in one spot. Try to defrost it. If that does not work then replace the solenoid.
