Hi rjlevesque

For the speakers, you need only connect to the GREEN jack at the back of your computer. It's OK to leave the others blank.

Your two HK speakers will, with one wire, connect to each other and, w/ another wire (usually having a GREEN connector on the end), connect to the computer.

I'm not sure what the 3rd wire is unless it's (1) the power connector or (2) for connecting to a sub-woofer.

Does the speaker set include a sub-woofer? Or does it include a "surround sound" or 3rd speaker?

You can find pics & symbols (the symbols are helpful if your sound card jacks are not color-coded) for (3) of the most common audio connections HERE.

Usually the color of the connector on the wire is matched to the sound card jack w/ the same color. (green to green; pink to pink; blue to blue).

green = speakers
pink = mic
blue = line in

Make sure you are connecting to the active sound connectors - the ones you used b4 the HK speakers.

If you have "integrated audio" (audio that is built into the motherboard) and you have an audio expansion card installed on the computer as well, one may be disabled or not selected in your computer's audio configuration.

If that's the case (that you have two sets of audio jacks to choose from), try connecting the speaker wire from the HK speakers 1st to the green jack (or the jack marked w/ the symbol of a speaker) at the bottom of your computer. (There'll only audio jacks here if there is an audio expansion card installed on your computer.)

If that is the case, there'll be other (usually) colored jacks running horizontally next to the speakers jack.

If you still have no sound, connect the speaker wire to the GREEN jack that is (usually on Dells) up by your PS2 (round - one purple and one green) keyboard and mouse connectors (also at the back of your computer). The other jacks in that set (of audio jacks) will be situated vertical to one another and on the left-most side at the back of your computer.

Please, let us know if this response was helpful for you or, of course, if you have any further questions.

Thank you
BJ

    To clarify....

    By (audio jacks oriented horizantally) "at the bottom of your computer" I meant meant to say at the back of your computer towards the bottom. The pics you'll see at the link I gave you will best depict what I'm describing for this example.

    Hello rjlevesque

    How did it go? Did the information and links I provided you w/ enable you to get your speakers hooked up OK?

    I DO hope that is the case. :) If it isn't, please, post back here and we'll continue to assist you.

    If it is the case, would you kindly take just a moment to close the problem by assigning a FIXYA rating for my "solution"? I would be very grateful for your generosity and show of appreciation.

    Thank you once again for using FixYa! Have a beautiful day.

Will Harman Kardon HK 206 speakers work with Windows 8

I just purchased a Dell XPS 8500 with Windows 8 and decided to keep using my old Harmon Kardon HK 206 speakers because I'm quite satisfied with these speakers. When I hooked them to my new PC, Windows 8 recognized them right away. The speakers work great on my new PC. Try going to the Control Panel and see if your speakers were recognized. (On my PC they're referred to as "Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio). That's due to the default drivers in Windows 8. As long as you see speakers in the control panel, you should be OK. In that case you should check your connections. If you don't see speakers in the control panel, go back one screen and select add a device and let Windows 8 scan for any device that it hadn't recognized before.

Somehow I apparently deleted the softward drivers for the speakers - my computer says I have no speakers I have unplugged, restarted and plugged in again to no avail - still no sound dell dimension 4500...

Go to www.dell.com (The site of your computer manufacturer), click on "drivers and downloads" which is at the bottom of the page, after then, click "select a model". Select the product of your computer and the model, there you will find the drivers for your computer speaker then you can download. You can download any other drivers that belongs to your Computer.

I wish you the best.

Don't you have a CD that have the drivers needed? There should be a support section in the Dell website. I'm talking about the drivers of course, but, is everything hook up right?

Hook on speakers to the right jack.
Most of times it is the Green Jack you must plug in the speaker. See for the speaker icon below the jack, that should give you the clue...
