Question about Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Nikkor Lens

1 Answer

Autofocus stopped working

The autofocus feature stopped working on my Nikon 18-200mm VR lens. I tried cleaning the contacts with no luck. My other VR autofocus lens works fine on my D80 body, so I'm pretty sure it's the lens. Anything else I can do before sending it off to be repaired?

Maybe cleaning the gold coloured contacts on the back of the lens and the ones in the camera may help. Worth a try!

Lens has lost ability to autofocus.

Nikon guarantees 5 year warranty to original purchaser. If your camera functions with another AF-S lens, then the problem lies with the 18-200mm lens. The AF motor unit needs replacement. Nikon should be able to repair the lens under warranty.
Make a copy of your receipt and go Nikon website to start repair service.

My Nikon D80 will not autofocus

Fix your issue with these steps:
1. Try forcing the lens to rotate a fraction of a inch. This will sometimes help the problem. Or simply move the switch from M to A on the lens.
2. Try to switching to a single of the 11 auto focus points. Then try if there are specific points that are the problem.
3. If all auto focus points are fine, try updating the firmware or cleaning the sensors inside the camera behind the mirror. If a one or more points are out of order, also try cleaning the sensors behind the mirror.
4. Detatch the lens from the camera, by applying pressure on the release button and twisting the lens so it can be released. See picture
5. Set the camera selection wheel to manual (M), see picture
6. Turn the camera on, and start the liveView format. This will flip op the mirror inside the camera.
7. Take a dry can blower. Or if in lack, use an empty plastic bottle, without moisture inside, and use it to blow on the autofocus sensors.
They are located at the bottom under the mirror. NOTE Do not blow with your mouth, small amount of moisture will hit the CCD also located here.
8. Turn the camera off
9. Reattach the lens. Push the lens, white point to white point and turn the lens in place.
10. This worked for me, hope it also helped you ;)

Unable to get my Nikon D200 to autofocus. Nikon 18-200 VR lens mounted

Clean the contacts on the camera body and the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

My nikon 70-200 stops focusing

Nice lens too... I would take a good look at the electrical contacts on that lens. If OTHER lenses are truly working correctly, you have eliminated the camera as the cause and need to look at that specific lens. The first thing that I would try is taking a pencil eraser and rubbing all of the contacts with it. This will often clean the contacts of dirt and grime and clear off any "coating" that may have accumulated over the metal portion of the contacts. Barring this, I would send the lens to Nikon for servicing. It is a high percision device and taking it apart yourself is NOT recommended.
