IO error means Input/Out error. It looks like your mediaplayer is not liking your external hard drive. Make sure the video is supported by the mediaplayer, otherwise you will need to convert it to a video file that the player supports.

Try to download VLC-mediaplayer from:Videolan.org and try with this program. and/or: i allways use Mediaplayer Classic http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/ this works really well for me and plays ALL Media. also download and install FFDSHOW: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/ffdshow.htm (this is the codec for media files)

youve got a few ways:
1) press on the link of the movie right mouse key - "save target as" download it and then open it
2) when the mediaplayer starts push stop untill you see the faint strip fills all the line time and then the movie wont stop for buffring
3) choose a lower resolution before cliking the movie
