If it is an older battery powered Indiglo, try pulling the stem out about half-way, then turn the time-set knob toward you (counter-clockwise if you were looking at it from the side). They can be fussy, so you will probably have to play with it until you get the gears aligned so that you change just the date. Push the stem back in when you are done.
Your watch sounds like a mechanical type (old).
Older watches rely on the hour hand passing 12 to re-set the date.
Wind your watch until the date changes and then turn the hands backwards passed 12 and then forwards again to advance the date again. How far you need to wind it passed 12 (in both directions) is something that you will have to find out by experiment.
