You can download a DVD player program on your laptop which contains DVD code. It would be better to download region free players. You could try Leawo Blu-ray Player which can play any DVD discs regardless of DVD protection and region code. If you still can't play the disc, then you can check if the disc is damaged.

Myp 8460p wont play dvd media
You can check your DVD drive to see if there is any issue with your DVD drive. You can do this by using some DVD drive testing tools, such as Nero InfoTool and VSO Inspector.

Then, you can also try some other DVD player software tools such as Leawo Blu-ray Player.

My dell laptop inspiron 1525 wont play dvd's, but it will play cd's.. i have windows vista
Two things to check: First, look on the tray edge - does it say DVD and CD, or just CD? If it does not say DVD,it will not play them. The second thing is you may not have software to play a DVD. Usually Windows will use media player, assuming you have a dvd player. You can also open "my computer" and the drive will show up as a DVD or just CD.

Does the laptop play CDs?
If so then when you start a DVD and before you play the movie, go into the audio setting and configure the speakers for laptop stereo speakers.
If you cannot hear music from the CD then check :-
1. The audio settings, volume not set to minimum and mute is not ticked (enabled)
2. Device manager - sound device is enabled and working, if not re-install the sound driver.

Dvds recorded on video to dvd recorder wont play elsewhere
Mosr DVD recorders have a "compatible" setting or require you to "finalise" the disc. Check that is being done.

It's also worth checking that the laptop will play other DVDs sometimes you need a codec.

Hi damonabrown your laptop should play dvd's even if it can't burn them

as you have cleaned the drive there is not much else you can do ,as it still play's cd's,
data on a dvd is packed much closer as it hold about 6 times the data of a cd, and can fail much easier, it looks like a new drive will be needed soon.

Intervideo windvd.
try playing the dvd in windows media player, if it plays in that programme, then the intervideo programme is faulty.
