I have hp pavilion dv6226us and when booted up the screen stays dark. You can see display only if you shine a light onto the screen. I tried to turn up the brightness and did't have any luck.

Hi AC9746

The 1st thing to do is connect an external monitor to your computer. Connecting an external monitor to it will very quickly point us in the direction we need to go in troubleshooting the issue.

You may need to close the "lid" of the computer in order for the display to show up on the external monitor. Hopefully this will work since you're unable to see the display properties in order to select the external monitor.

If the display works w/ an external (**known good**) monitor connected to it then the issue is w/ the laptop's monitor. The next course of action is most likely to contact HP for warranty repair (if your computer is in warranty) or to replace the monitor.

If the display still doesn't work w/ a **known working** external monitor connected to it, then the issue is w/ the onboard video.

You can find manuals for your laptop HERE. However, I don't see a service manual there.

You can find HPs "Solving Problems" for "Display, Video and Graphics" HERE.

Please, let me know if this response was a "FixYa" (enabled you to successully diagnose your problem) or "Helpful" for you or, of course, if you have additional questions, etc on this topic.

If the solution I provided you w/ resolved or enabled you to diagnose your problem or answered your question, a "FixYa" would be most appreciated. :)

It is best to wait until the problem has been resolved b4 scoring the experts who participated in solving your problem or answering your question.

Very often it will take more than one exchange of information between you and an expert in order to resolve your problem.

If a proposed solution doesn't work for you, please, don't rate it yet. Instead, post back here letting us know and we'll continue to work w/ you until we find a solution or we're able to diagnose the problem for you.

Thank you
BJ

The parts listing for your computer can be found HERE, however, I don't see the monitor listed there for either of the models.

You can contact HP using the information found HERE.

You will need to provide them w/ the particular model no. you are referring to.

    Hello AC9746

How did it go? Did the information and links I provided you w/ enable you to determine if your LCD monitor needed warranty repair or replacement?

I DO hope that is the case. :) If it isn't, please, post back here and we'll continue to work w/ you.

If it is the case, would you kindly take just a moment to close the problem by assigning a FIXYA rating for my "solution"? I would be very grateful for your generosity and show of appreciation.

Thank you once again for using FixYa! Have a beautiful day.
    BJ @:)

The VGA card or the VGA driver is not properly installed, perhaps.Try reinstalling the driver.
If you suspect the monitor brightness controls then try fiddling with them untill the brightness is good enough.
Check monitor cable also(VGA).

Pavilion g7-1173dx possible screen inverter issue?

The inverter is almost always below the screen in the bezel. You should only need a plastic pry bar (cost about $3) and you pop the bezel off from the screen side usually, you may need to check for screws under any rubber stops on the screen too. After the bezel is off the inverter should be on the bottom with two plugs into it. Unplug, pull it out and swap.

No display on screen

It's either the backlight lamp or screen inverter is busted. Here's how to determine which is which:
  1. Grab a flashlight.
  2. Boot up.
  3. Shine the flashlight onto the screen.
  4. If you cannot see any display even a faint one, the screen inverter is dead, else the backlight lamps are busted.
  5. Replace which ever is the culprit.

Monitor goes on then off right away.

The backlight inverter is faulty.
THis means that there is either a loose contact or one of the transistors on the backlight inverter has blown

The backlighting is provided via the LCD inverter as you described.

My toshiba screen

Shine a torch light onto the screen. If you can see a faint outline of the images, it could indicate a back light failure. Unfortunately, you cannot fix this by yourself. You will need to take it for servicing.

Display problem

When the screen goes dark shine a flashlight in the lower right hand corner where the Start button typically is located. If you can see faint images then you have a backlight problem. If you don't see anything then try connecting a spare monitor in its place. If that works then you have some other type of problem involving your LCD monitor. In both cases unless you have the experience and tools to safely work on fairly delicate electronics this is not a repair job for the typical consumer.
