Olympus 2G xd M card with pictures - error message "clean card" or format

Just got Olympus SP-570 UZ camera and Olympus 2G M xd card. Taken 250 pict. Only possible to download 135 in computer xd slot - then error messages, something wrong with files. Could still see files on start explore menu. Tried to download one by one of the rest- not possible. Put xd card in camera - now message "clean card with dry cloth" or format, chose clean card and the camera shut down.. I tried numerous times to clean- no luck. Then tried putting the xd card back in computer or in card reader at HP printer or in camera with it connected to the computer.. Message not formatted card. Tried to download Paretologic program - but it only sees C,D,E drive not the card. I really need the pictures. Any help appreciated. Thanks

nb when I said download I meant copy - not move - as the manual and other comments warn against deleting through use of computer. Another point: When using the camera I thought it was exceedingly slow writing to the card, the camera finder went black for several seconds each time.

I have the same problem. i just purchased an olympus fe-340 with 2 gb; my family and friends went to have a vacation and took many beautiful pictures. I haven't had any problem during the vaction taking all the pictures i need. however, at home, after the vacation, i tried to view and review my pictures and the only thing that i can see in my lcd screen is "Clean Card" and "format". I cleaned it many times using a dry cloth as instructed, but it did not changed anything once the XD card was out back in the camera. I don't want to lose the pictures from this memorable vacation, so i don;t want to format the card yet. Any help for me to recover the picture? PLS HELP!

I had the same prob with 1030SW and 2G XD card. Recovered images with recovery software but some of the images were still corrupted. Could it be the reader we are using. I'm using Picasa from Google.

Just had the same issue today. The Olympus Helpdesk told me that the fact I had printed one of the picture from the Xd card in directly inserting the card in the printer slot for Xd created the problem....
The guy from the Helpdesk strongly recommended to transfer the pictures from the camera to the computer exclusively using the USB cable of the camera.
In the end I have saved all my 505 pictures in using the Smart Recovery from PC Inspector but why the hell this problem only happens with Xd cards?

I had the same problem as annejako. I was able to recover all my jpgs by downloading ZAR 8.3. Fortunately i only had 2 movies and they weren't important. Here is the link for the software. http://www.z-a-recovery.com/demo-ir.htm.

I also have had this problem.. I rang Olympus & they sent me a Digital Image Recovery Freeware.. Im currently trying that. They told me that for some reason wen we put our XD cards in our card reader it puts a file on the card, which can sometime corrupt the card. If you cant get the pic off your card using a recovery program, you can send away & get it professionally done..(probably at a cost). The only way to get rid of the error is to format your card again try to remember to upload pics with your cable rather than the reader.
(Fingers crossed I can get my images from this software)

I had this problem too. I rang Olympus & they have sent me some freeware to try & recover my pics..which has worked for me. If that didnt work I could send my card off & they will do it professionally.

They explained to me that when you use your card in a card reader it puts a file on the card which sometimes stay hidden & othertimes corrupts the card. They advised to also use your cable to upload pics.

Once the pics have been recovered the only way to get rid of the message is to format the card again.

Hello, I just had the same error and tried using pc inspector recovery and zar 8.4 I had no result or any image recovery of my photos. Im in the process of using Cardrecovery software but Im rather sceptical. How come most of you were able to recover the photos but I couldnt? Should I contact Olympus and get their software then?

I have had this same problem and calling Olympus was about as helpful as a hemorrhoid. I did, however, check out the PC inspector smart recovery that you mentioned and I received the same message you did "the filesystem card is so badly damaged so inspection is through the slow mode. So far so good, it has recovered 164 images and is 26% done. I am thankful to you all for your advice as these pictures are all I have of our first ever family vacation since becoming a family and my camera (Olympus FE-340) is only ONE month old.

Thank you again!

By using PC inspector smart recovery I have so far been able to recover all jpg files. The message from the program is that the filesystem on the card is so badly damaged so the inspection is through the slow mode. I am still trying to recover the movies on the card.

Before finding PC inspector, I tried the program Paretologic data recovery - but it could not even see the card. Then I tried the program Cardrecovery and it showed it could read 2/3 of the jpg files, but no movie or sound files. Cardrecovery showed a preview of the jpg files but in order to save the files you had to pay 40 dollars, and it could not read other files.

I have not yet found a way to fix the filesystem at the card - it still says clean card in the camera. and on explore, it wants to format. I did look around at the internet - my impression is that there is a lot of problems with the Olympus xd cards and I would like to have a feedback on that - plus how to fix the card another time and keep the photos etc on it, as well as avoid this kind of work. Thank you.

NB I made a mistake posting so my question got posted under a different camera. Please move my post to either Olympus - Digital Cameras, xc cards, or Olympus SP-570-UZ camera.

Hello Musat

The problem sounds to be with the card reader of the camera. Most often what happens is that the soldering on the card reader's connection to the circuit board gets loose and if one of these contacts are loose , it gives a card error.

The problem is most likely not firmware or card related and unfortunately opening the camera to check the soldering is not really a user friendly fix. If you send it in , it will cost about $40-$80 to have this fixed.

Have a look under a good light into the card slot and see if you can see anything out of the ordanary that may be blocking the contact pins but if there is none , you probably won't be able to fix this yourself.

If your camera is still relatively new , you should have it fixed under the warrranty service.

Kind Regards
Andrea

Never insert or remove a card while the camera is on. You can try to download the pics on the card to your computer using a separate card reader. Then, format the card in the camera.

Reads CARD FULL, can't view the pics, reads NO IMAGE

Sounds like the card has died. unfortunatly this can happen. and could be caused by a number of things including static.

you can maybe try a disk repair in windows.
hit your windows key and press r at the same time. in the command line type CMD and hit enter, it will open up a DOS window. type CHKDSK ?: /f where teh question mark is, is the drive letter that windows has assigned the card when you insert it. if it is an error that is repairible this might work.

Picture error message on olympus 1200

Sounds like you will need to format the memory card. This will permanently erase all the data from the card and then you will be able to use it again. To format the card: Press the Menu button - right arrow to setup - right arrow to format option. You will see format yes or no. Choose Yes and press ok. This will clear the Picture error message and the card can be used again. The picture error message indicates that this image is now corrupted and unable to be viewed through the camera.

Picture error

If you have a combo media-reader, put the xD card in that and connect it to computer. Copy all images through the reader. Then format the xD card. Now it should work okay.
