I have the solution! Had error 4 and had the repair guy come....he said its caused by too many suds...if you are using tablets that have rinse aid as well as rinse aid, it causes to many bubbles, these get sucked down the two little outlets (located at the bottom of the dishwasher door, easy to see if you open the door completly) and make the water level in the base seem higher than it actually is which triggers the over flow button. Now to fix it is SUPER hard....NOT! Just pull out your dishwasher, and tip it back slightly. The water stuck in the base will trickle out...not much but will take 5-10 mins. Then turn it on, run on a rinse cycle to be sure its all gone! Easy Peesy. I called whirpool about this, and why they could not tell me how to fix it is beyond me......they told me to press and hold the start button...i dont think even they know how to fix it! So...I got to do this under warranty, now hopefully you get to fix it for free and we all win. Yay!
Thank you
I did this too but instead of tipping it backwards I tilted it forwards same result, mop up water that comes out with towels and hey presto no more "error 4" thanks for the information.
Read the book (useless) looked on the web and tried this remedy. Apart from me skipping over the comment about needing towles and getting a wet sock (LOL) it works. No error $. Thanks buddy
Thanks Heaps, I did what yesseppi did and its now working. We had only recently had the machined serviced so I am so happy that this approach worked.
Awesome
Hi yes l did this and what a great help it was too. by tiupping it baclwards .l read the manual and what a waste of time that was. Unitl l came on here l found out what was going in. l was so close to taking the dishwasher back to the place that l got it from. My dishwasher is only 3 months old. l was not impressed at all.
Just wanted to say a HUGE thankyou for this advice. Our dishwasher has run perfectly for 16 mths until this evening after it was packed, it came up with ERR4 and we tried everything (except for this advice) to get it working. Well you are absolutely right, my Hubby says the manual is so useless ya cant even wipe yer bum with it *lol* We tried the warranty number but they were closed. Thankfully we googled the code and landed here and now the dishwashers fixed and ready to roll again - no more ERR4 and smiles all around!! 8-)
Thank you Kazzbarr. Same problem Error 4, Perth Australia. No idea what to do and manual is hopeless. I had a wetvac so tried sucking water from door holes and drain. With all water gone, no change so pulled it out tilted it back, a couple of towels full of water came out and now its all good again 4th Aug 2011.
OMG thank you very much this realy does work so greatful
OMG thank you very much worked great and save $ when i rang assistant line just wanted to send tech and have to wait for them to fix when it only had taken me 10mins thank you for you advice
Thank you, just saved myself a call out fee. Dishwasher fixed after following your suggestion. Woo Hooo!

Thanks heaps. This worked a treat and saved me the cost of a call out as well.

I just did what the girl above said, Tip it on its back slightly with towels around the base at the back to soak up all the water that drains out and PRESTO after about 3 mins tilted backwards water had stopped dripping out and i pressed POWER and YESSSSS no ERROR 4. Great Advice Thanks!
The ERR4 error code indicates overflow detected. This can be for a bunch of reasons. For us it was because the dishes we put into the dishwasher had too much food on them. The filter clogged, and possibly food ended up going down the little over flow sensor tubes.
Assuming the dishwasher has no water inside it (i.e. while running ERR4 it has pumped it'self out), the fix.
1. Turn off the dishwasher.
2. Get some towels.
3. Empty your dishwasher (just slide the trays out with the dishes still in them).
4. Clean the filter and any extra bit floating around the in the dishwasher.
5. In the bottom of the machine neat the front edge there are two small tubes. These are almost hidden by the bottom of the door.
6. Pour water down each of these tubes.
7. Close the door and turn on the machine to empty the water out.
8. Tip the machine back for a few minutes (this is where the towels come in).
9. Open the machine and get a pen body (straw, pen body, 1/4 inch tubing etc will be fine). Put the pen body into tube into one of the tubes mentioned in step 5 and blow. Repeat this for the other tube. This should help clear anything stuck in these tubes.
10. That should be it....
I had the same problem, I just turned off the inlet hose at the tap and unscrewed it. This seemed to release the pressure that built up. Turned the on/off button on and pressed start, and it's now working fine so far.
Yeah it worked after 1 minute for me thanks : ) Just wished I knew what the problem was 3 hours earlier
Well done Kazbarr worked a treat I am still waiting for Whirlpool to get back to me with an answer!!!
I have the same problem but i leave it and it fixes itself yay
So what's the correct answer when they are brand new? I work at an apartment complex, and installed 4 in the past 2 day. Every one STARTED with an e4 code. Have been installing them for years with never an issue. But this newer version with an all plastic base is nothing but problems.
This didn't work for us. :-( error 4 keeps happening. It won't drain and when we tipped it, no water came out. Can only assume there's a blockage somewhere. Any suggestions?
Yep, I had the same problem - error 4 just tipped it forwards after pulling it out of the cavity unplugging everything. It worked!
Hi all, I had the same problem, error code 4, and after reading all these treads was convinced it was the float sticking. WRONG. After pulling off the side cover (Remove top first with two screws on back, then kick plate, two screws underneath and the trick here is that there are two plastic lugs inline with the feet that need pulling up, I broke one, then remove the LHS panel by undoing the 10-15 screws) I checked the float and this all seemed right. I checked all hose connections and none of them appeared to be leaking. I then ran the machine with the sides off. BE CAREFUL as everything is now to be considered as LIVE. When it started filling I noticed water was coming out of the center of the machine and on closer inspection found it was actually on the inside washing area that was the problem. And it was all my fault. When I had previously removed the bottom jet arm to clean out all the little holes I must have bumped the crew cap that goes through the floor as it was 1/4 of a turn loose and letting water down to the motor area, hence setting off the float and activating the Error 4. 1/4 of a turn on a plastic cap would have saved me 1.5hrs of stuffing around. So please check that first.

Kids helped with the dishes, then the dishwasher says ERROR 4. Frustrated turned to internet for solution, pulled it out, turned it off and tipped it over a bit, water on the floor. Cleaned up the whole thing turned it on and hey presto, fixed. Thankyou thankyou.

I just had the same thing, same model. After cleaning the filter out, the problem remained. I then read on another forum that it helps if you tilt the machine backwards for a few minutes (which involved pulling it out of the cavity in the kitchen). Did this and it now seems to be working. Hope this helps you.

your not alone. i to have this error 4 and so do hundreds of others.it means low water level even like mine your water level probably isnt low.what happened to mine was the sensor got a layer of fat and oil scum buildup on it and couldnt detect the water level so i cleaned it and worked good for another month. then same problem.solution- dishwasher had an "accidental short due to water leak" wich insurance covered and bought me a new dishwasher (fisher and pikel) now no more problem

how do i fix an error 4
Hi, I have the same problem with my dishwasher. But i have tipped it back, tipped it sideways and almost tipped it upside down to empty the water. But each time it still comes up with the ERR4 message. Has been doing the same thing for weeks. I pulled all of the sides of it and checked the float, and it moves freely up and down????
