Tip & How-To about Washing Machines

Smelly washers

OK there are a lot of people with the smelly front load washer . the smell is caused buy a build up of detergent it is recommend that you use 2 tbs of detergent and 1 if you have a water softener. also leaving the door open after a washing is good to help it air out . to often people blame the door gasket because they get spots on them well the rubber used is a antimicrobial rubber so it cannot mold . the smell is actually soap build up trapped inside the washer if you run your washer with nothing in it and see soap suds your using to much detergent. there is hope though cutting back on detergent and using a product called Lemeshine mc3 will eliminate the odor issue.

LG WM0642HW smells bad. We leave the door open when not in use to dry it out and air it out. But the smelliness is getting worse.

There have been lot's of reports of moldy door seals. Check your door seal at the bottom to see if it is holding water and not draining properly. Dry and clean with a bleach solution is it is. Front loaders don't always drain completely. WHen you start a new cycle the first thing they do is purge any water left from the previous one. This also causes a mold issue. Easiest solution is to do a stain cycle with presoak and add 2 cups of bleach to kill the mold. Obviously no clothes! Good luck!

Kenmore front load HE washer odor

How old is your machine? Mine is 5 years old, and I just started to get a "sewage" smell in my laundry room this weekend. I disconnected the water return to the sewer line and discovered lots of gunk in the hose, and the connector to the machine was completely dark green. I'm going to replace the hose, and trying to figure out if there is some sort of filter.

We only use He detergents too, so I guess this is something that just happens over time.
