Have you tried some headphones directly into the headphones socket? Does the sound still crackle? Usually 'crackle' is associated with dodgy leads and you will be able to hear the lead responding to movement by crackling more, a hissy sound often means that there is a fault with the socket and sometimes removing and reconnecting the jack into the socket a few times will help this. If it sounds like hiss with little pops it's usually electrical interference and could mean a bad earthing in the circuit somewhere
