I would start by checking the filter and cleaning it, this is usually located at the bottom right front of washer behind a flap or cover, unscrew an ti-clockwise to remove and clean.
If the machine is under 5yrs old ring Hotpoint.. They will charge around £90 to repair the machine including parts and those parts will be guaranteed for a further year...
It sounds like you have a control board issue and the control board plus labour would cost you in excess of the Hotpoint charge
The main motor in the whirlpool front loaders has brushes. These will wear out eventually. Does the drum try and turn when a load is started? If not the motor deserves a check. 18 months sounds short but possible. Mine took 4 years to wear down.
the unit is only 18 nmohths old then what you need to do is contact the manufacture and explain to them what is happening and if they are having simuary isssues with that particular moidel number. Possibly they are and you may be able to have it repaired on their dime! 18 months is not that long for a washer to start having these problems if you have not abused the unit by overloading the washer or over filling it with soap. If it's only 18 months old surely it will still be under some sort of manufacturers guarantee, you don't bin 18 month old coffeemakers nor should you be paying to fix them. Put the problem back in their lap.
mains filter capacitor usually goes with a bang and puff of smoke it is usually located near to where the mains cable enters the machine fixed to the rear panel by a nut the main cable is connected directly to it then the cables from it feed power to the machine. the capacitor is usually round in shape and has four connections onto it
