How can I mute the headphone jack on an Insignia 22" lcd TV? The remote control will mute the internal speakers but not anything plugged into the phone/headphone jack. Must I open up the TV and make an external speaker/amplifier audio connection to the TV internal speaker connections? If I need to do this please suggest how to open up the TV to gain access to the internal speaker terminals.

As an idea, I was thinking as I read your post, I thought that this would be an ideal application for a pair of "Wireless/Ired Headphones", you could plug these into the headphone socket, and then use these to hear your sounds, these units have a mute on board.
You could indeed wire it into, the unit going in through, the back of the, set. You could wire it up, but in reality, it would be better to use a third party device and that way would not compromise any warranty.

First off have you considered getting a set of headphones with their own volume control? Also could you please give me the specific model and I would be happy to assist you further.
Thank you,
Lee

    .
    Detailed description of the receiver:

22" Insignia 1080p LED HDTV 22E430A10 (Best Buy store brand)

    1) I want to be able to use both internal and external speakers. The intent is to improve sound from internal speakers which is not very good by adding simple external speakers. The only external sound output is via phone/headphone jack.

"Mute" on remote control only mutes the internal speakers and not the phone/headphone jack or connected device.

    2) I could leave the internal speakers muted and then deal with the external speakers separately. I have volume control of external speakers. What I want to add is simple push button, on/off, i.e. "mute" remote control capability to the external speakers. How can I do that?

Is there a stand alone simple wireless SPST remote controlled switch/relay I could wire into the external speaker wire? This SPST remote controlled switch/relay could be activated via the Comcast remote if a remote code is available and if not a separate hand held remote control which would be used only for the "Mute" function.

    You suggestions/ideas please . . .

For all that trouble you might as well get a stereo receiver to handle the audio.
    Thanks,

I can't get sound through my headphones on my Bravia kdl-52xbr5 tv. First time I have tried to hook up the headphones which are sharper image wireless

I take it the headphones are charged up and known to be in good working order? Are you using the 3.5mm headphone jack on the side of the TV or the white and red RCA jacks labeled AUDIO OUT (VAR/FIX)? If using the headphone jack the TV should shut off the internal speakers and output to the headphones. If using the mentioned RCA jacks you need to go into the audio options settings and set to Audio System. Also under audio settings, Audio Out, you can pick Fixed or Variable. If you opt for Fixed you will use the headphones to adjust the volume. If you opt for Variable you can control the headphone volume and muting using your TV remote control. Just make sure you have the headphone volume turned up adequately.

Internal speakers won't turn off when external audio is connected

Normally , you would expect the TV sound to stop when headphones are plugged in. Obviously not in this case. If you have a set of headphones, try them and see if the TV still has speakers on. If it does, then there may be a setting on the setup of the TV to get headphones to work. If the TV speakers stop, then I would think that the Logitech are not compatible with the TV. The only other thing would be is to get into the TV and disconnect the TV,s own speakers. If the wires are soldered on and not terminal connected, carefully cut 1 of the wires off near the speaker. If 1 wire is cut, the speaker wont work. Make sure both the TV and the additional speakers (If they have their own power supply) you are using are unplugged from the power before you go doing this...!

Turn off internal speakers

This is usually a menu option that you can reach with your remote. I don't have this particular TV, but if you can turn them off, it is usually a menu configuration option. Hunt around with your remote until you find the configuration menu and look for the "sound" settings.

If your TV has a headphone jack, try plugging a set of headphones into the TV to see if that disconnects the internal speakers. If it does, go to Radio Shack and buy an appropriately sized blank plug and just plug that in to the headphone jack to disconnect the speakers.

Adding remote control activated ''mute'' to TV headphone jack

Generally when the head phone jack is inserted the speakers will get disconnected automatically.

If you are going to use external amplifier you can try the AV sockets. Opening the TV you may require the special screw drivers some times.

Can't mute inbuilt speakers

That is not a software problem.
The headphones/external speakers jack socket has a switch to exclude from audio the internal speakers, when a jack plug is connected.
This is a very simple device and is not software controlled.
The fact that it has gone faulty at the same time you reinstalled the system is a coincidence.
If it does not mute when you insert headphones, all you can do is trying to play with the jack plug , inserting and pulling it out. If this does not unlock the switch, the alternative is having the jack socket replaced by a technician. This is generally an expensive repair, asthe socked is soldered on motherboard.
A cheap alternative to a proper repair is using an external USB to Audio Adapter and mute the internal audicard when using headphones.
