The filter is not the source of this problem (and it is near the pump inlet under the lower panel u called the "kick" panel), all the filter does is trap large objects like coins so the pump is not damaged, the smell is caused by the front gasket door seal and the residual water left in the washer drum, on a regular basis you must clean the front door seal with a product like LYSOL Mold and Mildew remover and a soft cloth, also you can spray the mold and mildew remover into the washer basket/drum and then run a tub of hot water with one cup of good Clorox bleach, remember this must be done on a regular basis to stop the problem, it is common to all front load washers no matter the brand, answer this question over and over on the fixya site, the method i gave u is the best way i have found to stop the odor problem.
HI. This particular unit dose not have a drain filter or "lint filter" before the pump. This is a huge design flaw that will cause pump damage if coins or other debris escape into the drainage system. Make sure to clear all coins or obstructive materials from your pockets when washing clothes.
Concerning the musty(mold spores) order in the basket:
The odor that you are experiencing will be from the growth of mold. Inside the washer, some small pools of water may be left standing and is harboring mold spores. These pools will exist inside the drainage pump and hoses, as well. Even though you may operate the washer regularly, the mold spores are not being washed away.I have a couple of tips that might help to eliminate odor issues in your washing machine. First, and the most effective in my research is to, leave the door to the unit open. By leaving the door open after each wash, it promotes air circulation and evaporation of standing water. The reduction in odor, will occur quickly and dramatically.
My second tip is to run the washer empty for a quick rinse cycle. Add an entire cup of bleach at the start of the cycle. The bleach is effective at destroying organisms, such as mold and bacteria. However, running it once will not be completely effective. I suggest pouring another cup of bleach into the wash basket, after the cycle has completed. This will leave bleach as the standing pool and should prevent the growth of mold or bacteria. However, if you do this, before doing a load of laundry you should run an empty rinse cycle again, to avoid damage to the clothes from the bleach left standing in the wash tub.
My third tip will be to use nothing more than the HE(powder) detergent. Do not use liquid forms of HE detergent or fabric softeners in this unit or any other front-loader. The powder form will tend to wash away more efficiently and it will not gum up the internal hoses and pump, thus, causing mold growth within the system. I should also advise to wipe down the gasket or bellow after every wash, as well. This is a huge collection spot of gunk and mold.
In conclusion, performing these adjustment to your normal routine will reduce the musty order and rid your unit of mold spores and other order causing bacterias.
I'm sure you have came across this information, but i have to say that the information you have gathered is wrong. This Maytag front-loader dose not have a filter before the pump. This is one of the biggest design flaws ever...
Have a great day:)
I also posted some very valuable information on how to rid your unit of that ghastly mold smell. I hope you consider it.
Good day:)

I've read that there is a filter and that it is located behind the kick plate. Does anyone know how to access it?
