Shutter broken The shutter stopped working, and my local camera repair shop says they can't get new parts. However, I really like this camera and would rather not part with it. I'm not finding anything promising on the web -- Can anyone refer me to someone who repairs point 'n' shoot cameras like this? Given what new cameras cost and my preference for film vs. digital, the response I've gotten from some people of "It wouldn't be worth the cost" is not helping me to make peace with giving up this camera.

I called the business you recommended and asked the guy who answered if he repairs this kind of camera. He said, "No, I don't do any of that kind of stuff." Thanks, anyway.

  • Rhonda2066 May 02, 2008

I thought "giro 70" was the model #. Is there another one? Where would I find it?

  • Rhonda2066 May 02, 2008

p.s. I've been all over the Rollei sites in a couple of languages, and it doesn't look to me like they have any kind of repair service for their point-'n'-shoot cameras. I think I even did the zip code search, but the people I called locally didn't do this, either.

  • Rhonda2066 May 02, 2008

Responding to IrishDruid: I called the businesses you recommended. Harry Fleenor's shop only repairs the Rolleiflex cameras, not automatics like mine.

Marflex liquidated and gave its business to a place called Krimar Photo Shop -- (You can find them athttp://www.krimarphoto.com/Services.htm)... The owner says he doesn't fix the automatics and there are no more parts around. I'm not sure how this could be true, so am open to more ideas from you or others.
    Thanks.

  • Rhonda2066 May 02, 2008

Reply to The Machine: The Fine Camera Repair guy answered his phone but told me he's retired. Didn't have anyone else to refer me to.

  • Rhonda2066 May 14, 2008

To Bestdarngood: I just called the place you suggested, but the guy says they don't have parts for the camera I have and cannot repair it.

  • Rhonda2066 May 14, 2008

To Eske: I've just emailed Advance Camera, as suggested by bestdarngood. Their website says they'll reply in a couple of weeks.

I haven't found another camera I like as well, so I'm still pursuing all options. I'd get another one of the same model, if I found it-- nothing on ebay last time I checked.

  • Rhonda2066 May 14, 2008

To Eske: Sorry for the mistaken credit -- I notice that you are the one who recommended advance camera, not bestdarngood. Thanks. I will post when I hear back from them.

  • Rhonda2066 May 16, 2008

Thanks everyone for all your suggestions. None of these worked out. I'm giving up on my Giro 70. However, I did find a new Rollei Giro 90 for $70 and decent customer service by phone at Tristatecamera.com. They might be a good resource for someone in the future.

this seems to be a hard camera to find. I would constantly check ebay or even post a need for another one on craigslist or other websites in hope that someone has one that they don't want anymore. I'm sorry that I could not do more in helping you find a new one but everywhere I looked, they were out of stock, most likely for good.

have you checked with advance camera?

  • Ekse May 14, 2008

It's starting to seem like a lost cause, I would move to a new camera as the repairs might not be available at all or cost more than a good new camera.

  • Ekse May 14, 2008

Have you tryed to call them?

Hello Rhonda2066,

Rolleis made before 1981 are not serviced by Rollei Fototechnic. They have no parts. Rollei service for pre 1981 camera's is done by independent repair shops. They may have some parts. Unfortunately there is no Grand Source for Rollei Parts, and finding a shop nearby (or anywhere for that matter) that has these parts is like looking for a needle in a haystack.

If you wish, you can try THIS ebay link, and THIS. Its got a lot of Rollies. Not sure if they have what you're looking for, but give it a go..BTW, the site is in Italian. You can use THIS free online translator...

Hope that helps...

Probably your best bet is to find an identical camera that has a different problem that someone is selling on eBay for parts. Then you could pull the parts you need from that one. I've done my usual Internet searches and have not come up with parts availability either. Can't check eBay from work here.

I did find this: http://www.finecamera.com/rollei/index.html

ok,now there are only two solutions to fix your camera.1)you will have
to send it to repiar to the Rollei people and only they can help you
    out.Here are the contact details:

    Main support number 19732449662

    Support FAX 19732449817

    Email support[email protected]

Or just scroll down the page and on the right side you can see a
"REPAIR SERVICE" box, just enter your zipcode in it and you will find
the repair man near your area.

    Goodluck..

Hi,
Shutter button is available in parts shops and local camera repair shop will replace it.
Sony will charge you too much to replace that button.
Let me know if you have any additional question.
Thanks.

I was just got a new battery for the canon av 1 and i swiched the dial to B and pressed the photo button, and i heard a click. nothing happened so i took the lens off and the mirror inside was retracted up...

OK, Tony, that sounds really strange, LOL.

There should be no orange plastic in there. I considered the AV-1 myself years ago, but was already invested in Minolta gear.

Without pictures, it's really hard to say. I kinda feel like something that should never be there, got put into the mirror box/ shutter area. It got broken off when the camera fell down. It would cost too much to repair, so it was sold for parts.

Look it over to see if the shutter was damaged. I 'd think so, but check it. Can you remove the plastic without damaging the camera further?

The A-1, AE-1, AV-1 were very similar and very successful models for Canon and another "Spares" of that series should be easy to find. You most likely will need to get the shutter from another junker and have a shop cobble together one that works. You might ask the repair guy if he wants to keep the extra parts. You may get a discount on repair. Otherwise hang on to those spares yourself.

Light meter stopped working and shutter stopped firing

about the only thing you can do other than take or send your camera to a repair shop is to remove the batteries and clean the cap and contacts with a pencil eraser be careful not to damage the contact. also move the on/off switch and select knob back and forth a few times to clean the contacts. i would get a repair estimate first as there are no new parts available for this camera.

Silver button to take picture popped off

If you do a search for "sony h2 shutter button replacement" on Google.com you will find a shop that sells both the shutter button and a repair service to install the shutter as well.

Hope this helps!

Camera shutter issues

Dege,
You were hearing extra clicking or noise on long exposures right? I thought it was a dirty shutter so cleaning is what I thought should help. If your shop thinks it needs a repair that is a bit more pricey than thorough cleaning. If you suggest to them to consider cleaning the shutter mechanism so the parts move smoothly instead of repair / replacing how much less would that cost? Also would they think that would be enough, they may have seen some corrosion or misalignment that is snagging or hanging the shutter up, so it may need the extreme solution. If they don't recommend it or are insulted by your desire to think about another solution seek a second opinion, there's nothing wrong with trying to save some money esp. if you don't need that type of surgery, you know what I mean. If the other shop says yes that shutter is damaged and needs it. You know you have to do it eventually. Just find the best price wiht the shop that you like. As far as the normal wear & tear not really, we are shooting a D80 purchased in Dec 2006 at an average of 1,000 shots a month sometimes more. My wife is a photographer as has really used it constantly, it has been very reliable. Since your camera is more than 2 years old it is out of warranty. I will check Nikon for any sort of recall or issue with the shutter and get back to you.
