My laptop computer, Toshiba Satellite A205-S4577 backlight keeps going off and on. Even when the backlight goes out, you can still faintly see the screen enough to keep working. It is about 3 years old and is not used too often. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

I had problems with Toshiba's website giving me wrong drivers. Try looking up, on device manager, the manufacturers name for the sound card and go to their website for answers.
this is the problem of power surge. get your system properly checked. or do one thing first you plug in the system the turn on the system. if problem persists get back to me.
Have you tried a new power AC/DC convertor ? make sure you have the correct spec...see manual for power adaptor needed. Cost less if you can get a loan of one. other than this i would be looking into checking the power jack. hope this helps
If the battery is removed, it should still start up with the charger connected. A lot of laptops develope problems with the jack where the power supply plugs in, from constantly plugging & unplugging the charger. The jack in the back of the computer is probably bad.
