Had to replace transmission and now drill is stuck in hammer mode. I think problem is in section in front of the transmission. Have taken it apart (as far as it goes without removing bearings) and can't see anything wrong. Any suggestions??

Yes there is I looked and the model number posted is a demolition hammer, so you might want to recheck before checking, but go to Dewaltservicenet.com and in the middle of the page it will ask you for parts or below that manual, go to manual and type in your model number and you will get an explosion and current pricing for this tool. spray some oil into it and tap it lightly with a small hammer. Then hold the chuck and gently squeese the trigger in forward setting and backward setting. Do not use full force on backward setting.
This should do the trick.

They all do that a bit. The sparks when starting up and stopping are normal. If it has been used alot brushes may be a good idea but before they need to be changed it will spark quite a bit.
It will not hurt to inspect the amount of brush material remaining.

I am assuming you are talking about
not being able to move the "Mode Control Collar" and unless you can
get it out of hammer mode, you will not be able to change the torque collar
either.
If you feel comfortable taking it
apart AND its no longer under warranty, my best guess without seeing the tool will
be part# N026313 Gear Case Assembly. It costs about $80.00 US
Hopefully its under warranty, if so
