IBM Wheelwriter 30 series II - prints only half a letter

Replaced ribbon on typewriter - now it only types half of letter. I have another IBM in office so I switch ribbon and even the cartridge printwheel between the two machines. All the pieces worked fine on the other IBM, but won't work on the one we are having problems with. I had problems like this years ago, but I can't remember what I did. I know it is something really simple.

Help.

Problem with Wheelwriter 30 - full letters print but they are light or missing parts - seems to print fine on one sheet of paper but anything more bulky does not give a good impression. Repairman changed platen but that didn't do it.

If it types only the top half yhe platen is probably not all the way in. Make sure the 2 black latches are lined up with the side frames then press down firmly on both sides of the platen.

If the print is OK on carbons but not the original the trouble is supplies get a genuine IBM purple leader ribbon the part No. ends in 999 this should help also code Q increases the impression.

Typewriter is only typing the top half of each letter- changed ribbon- still doesn't type the bottom of the letters ???

typing the top half of each letter Donna, sounds like the carriage spool is stuck or out of adjustment. Not to hard, but pick up typewriter and slam it down on counter to see if it put carriage and spool back in position.
Good luck.

Wheelwriter 30 series II. was typing OK but now get only less than half of letter to print. replaced ribbon same thing. tried adjusted ribbon (now sure was in right area) and still only printing less...

If it is printing only the tops of the letters the platen has worked loose. Press down firmly on both ends it should snap into place. If the print is generally bad the plastic print solenoid cap is probably broken. We sell them for 20.00 includes shipping and instructions.

I have an IBM Wheelwriter 15 Series II and the ribbon needed replaced so we replaced it, now when you try to top it just types the top half of the letters??????

Make sure both tabs on the rear of the cartridge are in their respective slots. If that does not work, try pushing down on the black platen roller on both ends. If one side is not locked in place, you will get half letters.

Only part of a letter appears when typed

You can try code I to increase the impression but probably the print solenoid is gummy or the plastic solenoid is broken. We sell the caps with installation instructions for 20.00 includes freight. DickyO Cleveland Business Machines 216-241-0027

ONLY TYPES TOP PART OF THE LETTER IBM WHEELWRITER 30 SERIES II

The most common problem is the platen (black roller) gets out of position. Be sure the black latches are aligned wuth the side frames then push down firmly on the ends of the platen it should snap into place.
