I have a Bionaire BT40RC Tower Fan that is making a A"screeching" sound when it operates. It probably just needs a little grease to eliminate the plastic parts from rubbing. I've tried to disassemble the fan, but I can't see how to remove the top cap to get to the rotating fan. How can I remove the top cap?

open it. look for a wire that has become disconnected from careless factory assembly

Yeah easy on the back near the handle there are two screws unscrew them next gently tug the back cover off and it will sound like it is break but it is just unclicking. And as always unplug the thing.
SOURCE: Motor problem
hi,
I wrote to a person earlier about oiling one, now Im thinking she may be having the same problem you have, I will paste that info at the bottom, but sounds like your fan blade assembly has come loose and/or worked its way back down to the motor, study the fan blade assembly and look for an allen bolt or ring holding the assembly to the shaft, remove the ring or loosen the allen bolt , adjust the fan blade assembly so it doesent bind, oil the motor with regular 10w40 motor oil and dust the fan, these are good little fans and that company has been making those since the40's, also sending user guide link.

The M5 indicate it is a metric size and the 12 is the length. I had the same problem when I unpacked my fan and was able to buy two M5-16 screws from my local hardware stoe for 45 cents a piece. In case your asked, they have an 80 pitch.
