Take the lens off and continue pressing the shutter untill it doesn't react anymore, you should then have a normal menu without the error message.Put your lens on and you're all sorted.Cheaper and less hassle than sending it to Nikon.

I took the lens off and put it back on and it worked fine.
I've just bought a second hand D40 with the reported same trouble. Sold "as faulty".
When I switched it on it gave the error message "Press shutter release button".
I took the lens off and pressed the shutter release button with no result.
I then turned the camera upside down, pressed the release button repeatedly and the camera began to work.
Power off the camera. Put off the lense. At the back of the lense you can see a lever. Smoothely pull the lever all the way it goes, stack it with very little pc of paper that it can't move any more. Attached the lense, set the camera in Auto mode, turn on and shoot. In other mode the message will appear again. As it is a problem with the motherboard the only way to get rid of this is change the main board.
Ok i took out the lens and looked throught the front, and noticed a small lever on the left hand side that wouldnt move. i then manually moved the flap/screen thing in the middle until th esmall lever clicked and moved again. i re attache the lense and it has worked just fine. thank you for the other tips i would have never figured it out without trying the other tips first
I just hit the bottom softly with my palm until it made a noise like the shutter was readjusting and now works with no problems!

I had exactly the same problem, i tried everything,battery out, sd card out , lens off etc...nothing worked.Completely by chance and irritation i repeatedly pressed the shutter butten over and over
( without the lens attached ) till it didn't react at all.On my LCD i got a normal menu so i put the lens on and bingo it was fixed, still works fine.I think maybe the shutter was out of alignment.

I don't understand your solution. I toook the lense off, turned my camera on, and could not get the shutter to fully depress. How can you keep pressing it?

I am using Nikon D40. It was working really good until I started getting "Error: Press Shutter release button again". Manuals were not of much of help.
Please suggest if something is possible before taking it to Nikon Specialist.

I've got the same problem. I've noticed that this only happens in conditions where the flash is not going off (when set on auto). If I set the mode to night mode, and force a flash, I can get it to work - but obviously this can't be a permanent solution.
Any thoughts?
i have a problem with my nikon d40, it's less than a month old.... i mistakenly kept it on for 3 days and after that whenever i turn the camera on it shows error message : please press shutter release button.... If i take the battery our and then put it on again then the error goes away ......but i have to do it every time i turn my camera on........did my battery get weak ??? is it related to the battery or other factors........??? i tried the without lens solution but it did not work for me........would be very helpful if someone had any solution....thank you

I have the same problem; after doing all the suggestions, I was able to take one photo and then the error came back. no luck in trying the suggestions again.

I have the same problem, but only when using an AI lens w/ anything other then the lowest possible F-stop. I'm curious to see if anyone else has a similar issue (set to manual mode and reduce F-stop as far as it will go, and see if it works, change F-stop and see if problem returns).
When I take my lens off and press the shutter release, all I get is a message saying that the lens is not attached. Am I doing something wrong?

I fixed shutter release problem but the shutter reflector is stuck.How can I have it move?
I had a Nikon D40 with that fault. I remedied it with taking the lens off and tapping the camera into the palm of my hand with the shutter release button pressed down. It came to life then. I've seen several videos on Youtube (yes it's good for remedies, just type a search in for your problem and you may find it.) I found a couple. One showed where it catches on the right hand side (as you look into the front of the camera. The gentleman just poked something very thin down that side and released it. Another took the whole thing apart to get at 2 levers which were attached to the shutter. I know which one I would try first.
Another cause could be dirty contacts. Give them all a light clean with a cotton wool swab.
