My MP500 will scan anything less than a full page; ie. photos. However a full page scan results in a black to colored bar about 1-1/2" wide on the scan.
When I try to scan a full-page document, it frequently breaks it into two different pieces, which I can't use. I don't have (or can't locate) a "Specify" button, so don't know how to adjust from "auto-select" to "Full". Any more suggestions? When I try to scan a full-page document, it frequently breaks it into two different pieces, which I can't use. In the control panel for the scanner, on the bottom left is a button labeled "Specify," where you can adjust how much of the page it scans. Sometimes it is "auto-detect," sometimes it is the size of a small photo, sometimes it is full page. You just have to set it to what you want. Usually auto-detect works, but sometimes it misses and only scans part of a full page, so you have to set it manually to full page.

Get the latest driver from Canon's web site. Then uninstall the printer. Remove the driver from your computer. Use regedit to remove any traces of your printer from your registry. Install the new driver. That should do it.
Hi there. It sounds like you are not correctly setting up your page for scanning. Are you just putting the page in and hitting scan or are you going through the scan "wizard?" You need to let the scanner know what you are printing (color pic, black and white pic, text doc, etc.) and how big it is. Let me know what happens.
I was very frustrated by this problem too, but just found a fix at last!!
Instead of focussing on the settings on the scanner itself. Use the MP navigator software to change scan settings and get around this problem. there you can set document size, colour or black and white and even DPI (quality) .
Mollmal...if you read the previous posts you would realize that the grayscale option still uses color....and does not solve the problem...there are two black ink cartridges in my printer...a small one that goes with all the color ones and a large black ink resevoir...the small one is completely empty...the big one is full....I think what people want to know is ....how do they print in black and white solely from the big one...I would like to know also
Hey,
Sound like something is wrong with the color cartridge. Replace the color one and try again. If that fails you might have to replace the printer as it doesn't sound like the problem is software related.
Your MP500 is similar to my MP780. I don't think you can get anything from the stores. It is hard to tell if the yield of 200 is accurate or not. It probably is but a lot depends o the images and text you are printing. If you print the color red, your yellow and magenta cartridges will be used to produce red. So in effect you will use up 2 colors to produce one color. To print something in greed your printer will mix the Cyan and Yellow (I think) and for blue it will mix Cyan and Magenta. So if you are wanting to print something for your own use, I suggest you print in black/greyscale only and in draft mode. However for presentation, I think it is best you do the standard printing. Black in draft mode I understand only uses the PG5 black cartridge. If you print anything in colors specially pictures, there is no way to accurately determine the yield and not a good idea to scrimp on the ink or else you get a poor quality picture.
I used some less expensive generic ink cartridges on my RX500 and had a similar experience with the black. If you're already using the Epson brand, done the head cleaning, realignment and nozzel checks, I'm not much help. Try Epson's support at their web site.
