I have an HP p6217. My speakers have suddenly stopped working. I have changed the speakers, downloaded the driver update but still the speakers do not work. do I need to get a new sound card. Which sound...

If I have your correct model, you have Realtek ALC888s High Def for sound you can download here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false
This is your board:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01324212&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=4006038#N278
There is no reason your sound shouldn't work unless something is really wrong. Get into "device manager" and check the box next to "sound, audio and game controllers". If you see a warning, ?, !, or a yellow triangle, click on that and follow proceedure. You should have a list of your device(s) showing at this point. Right click on each one, one at a time and, you should see, in the list, "disable", if you see "enable", click on that. You should also see :this device is working properly".
You should have a speaker icon in the taskbar, lower right of your screen. Right click on that, then on "open sound mixer", and adjust your volume. You have PCIe, PCIe x 1 and, PCIe x 16 slots so, you could upgrade to a sound and/or a graphics card. Let me know if I can help you further.

Hi! Think you have installed adriver not recommended to be used with your pc. Try installing a diffrent version. You can download it from the link--
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/

If it doesn't work go to bios settings when your PC boots by pressing F2 key. Then go to Advanced options and change the value of

Onboard Serial Port 1 : Option should be set to 3F8/IRQ4 .
Onboard Serial Port 2 : Set this to 2F8/IRQ3
Onboard AC97 Audio Controller: Enabled

Thanks
