This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action
Enter your model number (###.########) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
Also see the following illustrated description:

Some Kenmore washers do not use screws (i.e. do not have end caps on the console that pull off). Looking at the Sears diagram for the console you should be able to tell if it uses screws or spring clips.
If you un-plug the washer and slip a thin putty knife between the cabinet and control panel where the clip is, the clip should release allowing you to tilt the control panel back to gain access to the Lid Switch.

You can replace the switch, it appears, without lifting the lid. I've ordered the repair manual (LIT4314044) but I can feel the connector and wires. It appears that the lid switch can be replaced without taking anything apart. There does appear to be a screw on the back that holds the ground in place.

Pull of the end caps #14 & 11 on the diagram. Remove the screws and the front panel will flip up. Then there are 2 clips connecting the bac to the cabimet. Snap those out and the the WHOLE front of the machine comes off if you tilt it forward. Go to sears.com and parts to bring up any model for anything and you can kind of see how things go together. Good luck.

No problem. What you want to do is this, remove the screws from the back panel first to remove that metal plate protecting the wires. Once off you need to take off the two covers on the sides of the control panel. There is one on each side, just pop them off. Once off you will see there is a screw under there holding the control panel in place. Remove the screws and that will lean back. Next take a flat head screw driver and put it under the lip of the lid on the front of the washer. I mean the lip that is about an inch down from the top on the front. Pry up and the whole lid will pop up. You will see the lid switch there held in by a screw, follow the wire to where it plugs in and unplug it and replace with the new one. Let me know if you have any other questions and if this was helpful to you. Always happy to help and good luck.

Hi,
Let me offer you a generic solution for most of the Kenmore washers :-
There are 2 screws that secure the console to the cabinet top. The are
located in the front or rear corners, and on a Kenmore, may be hidden
behind the end caps. Remove the screws, and tilt the cabinet backwards.
Remove the 2 gold clips, and disconnect the wiring harness. Tilt the
cabinet forward, and off of the base. The lid switch can now be
accessed from inside the cabinet (I sit inside).
Hope i helped you.
Thanks.
