Hello - we have had this same issue a number of times as well. Do you lose all power on the unit too? We do - have discovered that using the self-cleaning isn't really a good idea with these ovens. The ovens aren't really made to heat to such high heats that are used in the cleaning cycle and during that last hour of cleaning it hits it highest peak - and it blows it's fuses. We recently blew 2 fuses at the same time, locking both doors (Double oven) and knocking out the power for the entire unit. Our repair man said that the average on wall ovens is anywhere between 6 - 12 cleanings before you will blow the same fuses and the whole cycle starts all over again. Our expense was $350. So, self-cleaning now means elbow grease around this house. How this information was a bit helpful for you.
Hey I am an independent appliance tech who use to work for Whirlpool / KitchenAid.
This is not a problem related to one brand. It happens to all brands.
When on self clean it heat up to or beyond 1000 F. It incinerate all grease and dirt to ashes. The door looks itself beyond 500 F for safety. Will release lock only after cooling.
Oven is made to withstand this high heat. But there is a big BUT...
Things goes wrong at this high heat.... System get jammed. Will not release the door lock after cooling down.
USE SELF CLEAN only When the STOVE is under warranty or extended warranty. Out of warranty be ready with a big pocket to pay for the door latch motor or control board. You will be lucky only to escape with releasing the latch motor manually and get it going again.
I would never buy a kitchenaid appliance again. My self cleaning feature on our superba dbl oven blew the mother board cost 400 to fix nd has never worked right since. Right now it stopped in mid bake and says 20 f and start. It won't turn off. So we have turned off the power to oven and are looking for new one. Certainly won't be anything buy kitchenaid!
Hi
You can set the unit on self cleaning and then after 15
minutes stop the cycle, let it cool down for an hour and then open the door. If
the issue remains then you'll have to replace the door lock assembly, then you
can open the door with a coat hanger by pulling the latch towards you. Hope
this helps...please post back for further assistance.
