Do you have a "diagonal" with this small telescope? It looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/Orion-1-25-Prism-Telescope-Diagonal/dp/B0000XMWYY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1313867352&sr=8-4
Put this into the focuser and then put the eyepiece into the diagonal. That all there is to it. If you are just putting the eyepiece into the telescope without the diagonal --- then you will need to OVER extend the focuser in order to come to focus as you described.
Only Meade will have the "rod". . You can buy a diagonal from various on-line retailers. They come in .965, and 1.25 inch sizes; measure the hole in the back of the tube and buy the correct size. Here are two retailers:

and here is Meade customer service: http://www.meade.com/support/index.html
ebay is a great resource for eyepieces, i would suggest a 26mm ma. the eyepiece should drop in. if not you might be missing the image erecting diagonal. when the eyepiece is installed you should be looking perpendicular at the tube.
