Your problem might be that a magnet has fallen off. Here's an illustrated guide that should make fixing it child's play: http://fixmytreadmill.blogspot.com/2010/10/how-to-fix-treadmill-e1-error.html
Good luck.
I have the same E1 code on mine, but the problem appears completely unrelated to the magnet. I used my TR1000 for about 1/2 hour last night at a moderate pace of 3.2 mph and an incline of 0. After approximately 25 minutes, it began to smell hot. I've noticed this before with no ill effects, so I ignored it. At about 29 minutes, the machine abruptly stopped. I shut everything down and revisited it this morning. The magnetic key operation appears normal. Key on, the display appears normal. Remove the key and everything zeros out. If I try to start a workout, it goes through the countdown, reaches zero, and sits there. After a few seconds, it displays the E1 code. I've tried pressing the reset button near the power switch and I've unplugged and plugged in the unit.
We are diagnosing this problem and believe it is the lower board due to high friction on the treadmill belt. Total Fitness services fitness equipment and also sells repair parts. I can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 773-509-0545

Total Fitness believes this E1 meassage is an indication the lower board has a faulty component. Total Fitness refurbishes lower boards as well as sells replacement parts. It is strongly suggested the treadmill belt and deck are replaced before installing a new or refurbished lower board.
