I purchased an Epson Artisan 800 (2008) from Best Buy and after a couple of mouths of use the printer continually indicates a warning/error message upon startup. The message states "An error has occurred. Turn off the power. Check for and clear the paper jam. Reattach any parts you may have removed. Turn on the power. For details, see your documentation."
I have followed the directions and searched for a paper jam and have not found one, yet I keep receiving the same error message.
I realize this may be a common problem with the Artisan 800 series and appreciate any advice.
Yes, that fixed the problem on my Artisan 800! Thanks so much for the info about slipping the cr scale back onto the u-guide on the back of the print head carriage, Larry P and dabaker!
For those trying this, the u clip is upside down so, from the front of the printer, you move the CR scale ribbon down a little and in towards you gently, in from the back towards the lower part of the rear of the print head assembly, and it will slip in on the top part of the ribbon into the u shaped groove (which, to be technical, looks more like an n-shaped groove, an upside down u). If it is loose and not clipped in, the CR scale ribbon will bow out easily on both sides of the print head carraige when lightly pressed towards the back of the printer near either side of the print head. (As pointed out in the service manual, do not touch the ribbon with your fingers, particularly if they may be greasy/greasty/gritty; use a clean tool for this-I used a q-tip which worked well for both testing the tension and for pushing it down and back into the proper guide slot.) If the CR scale ribbon is clipped in properly to the print head (properly seated in the n-shaped slot), it will bow towards the back of printer easily ONLY on the side that your press it from (ie left or right) but not on the opposite side of the carriage; the opposite side will remain almost entirely flush to the rear of the print assembly. Remember to press gently; you do not want to stretch or damage this scale ribbon if you can help it. If you have a small dental mirror and good light, you will be able to see the n-shapped clip (it's plastic and black on my 800 clearly. If the ribbon is correctly seated, it will be in the slot at the top and free at the bottom. Because of the use of u-slot in the previous posts, I was confused as to where to fit this in but then figured, nothing to lose and yep, it's actually the n-shaped slot at the top.

I cant take credit for this fix, but it worked on my Artisan 800 with the same error. My error occurred right after a paper jam where i had a tough time removing the paper.
"Open the printer. See a 1/4" grey plastic band that is attached to the
print head. This is the CR (carriage return) guide that tells the print
head exactly where it is. During a paper jam it is sometimes pulled out
of the slit on the head carrier that it has to be in to tell the print
head where it is on the carriage. Pull the print head out about half
way, and with a flashlight look behind the head carrier. You will see a
small plastic u-shaped piece. Make sure the CR ribbon is INSIDE the
slit, or u-shaped device. When this happens you will usually hear the
print head hitting the side of the printer twice while it tries to
determine its position. Be very careful not to damage the ribbon. It
will slip back into the slot quite easily"
My print head didnt want to pull out, so i took a small inspection mirror and had a look behind the print head. Sure enough the ribbon was outside of the sensor. I easily pushed down on the ribbon gently with my finger and pulled it towards me just a little bit and it popped back up into the slot. Closed the printer up and no more message.
Hope this helps some other poor soul.

SOURCE: i had to clear a paper jam in my Artisan 800
This problem is usually caused by the CR Scale forced out of it's **** by a paper jam. The CR scale is a 1/4" wide strip of grey plastic band that is visible when you open the printer. It is right above the serial number. Slide the head carrier to the left and look behind the head carrier. You will see a small U-shaped plastic piece. Make sure the CR scale is within the **** or u shape. Be very careful not to damage the CR scale as you slip it back it. When this scale is flipped out of the ****, the printer head slams into the right side of the printer on start up (twice) and produces the fatal error message, with the paper jam note.
SOURCE: trying to scan to email on Epson Artisan 800
If you are scanning wirelessly, you have to launch the epson scan software from your computer and scan to e-mail from there. You can scan using either professional or home mode.
Please take note that scanning from the printer only supports direct connection, which means you have to plug in the printer to your computer via a usb cable.
If you cannot launch epson scan, please let me know. And include the operating system that you are using too.
SOURCE: epson artisan 800 will not print
please make show that ur connection to the printer is correct.mostly if u using usb cable.uninstall and reinstall ur printer drivers can solve the problem.
