I have a Hutchins bass which is semi hollow and passive. I have noticed that the volume on the bass has dropped by half its strength. Bought brand new and all the pick ups work as I have a switch on the guitar to activate them. It is definately not the amp. Help?

Your amp has two inputs - Passive and Active. Do you get the same results plugging into either one? If only one works, then the other needs reconnection or replacement.
the 153 is wired like a Les Paul or SG
2 humbucker, 2 vol, 2 tone
with the addition of a 3 way coil tap for the neck pick-up
wired similar to:

That bass combines passive EMG pickups with an active preamp (which provides the bass and treble controls). Sounds like you are never getting the preamp to work, and if that is the case there could be numerous reasons...a dead battery...jack wiring that is broken (meaning the battery ground wire is not attached or is grounding out)...likely should see a tech, but that is a good sounding bass when working correctly.
If your Bass has Active pickups then it will only work when there is a battery. It will not work without a battery. If you do not want the active pickups then you can have someone swap out your pickups for passive ones. In fact, you can probably get passive pickups for free in exchange for your fancy (expensive) active pickups.
Good Luck
Yes, active use different value pots than passive. The volume control is LIKELY an "audio taper" which can be either an "A" or a "B" marking as there is confusion about the marking. The resistance is likely around 500K ohms down to as low as 50K ohms. The marking MIGHT be something like 504 B or 503 B or the same with the letter "A".
An A500 pot might be only 50 ohms... That would result in very low output. Again, the marking in the industry is not consistent.
Best bet is to get the part from Yamaha. Go to Yamaha America "parts" dept in California. You can search the phone number with Google.
