CP150 Capacitor Replacement

Hi

I have a RCA D52W20 and have read about the trouble with it not turning on. I have the same problem, green light comes on 3 times but it won't turn on. I just took the back panel off and located the CP150 capacitor (thanks for the guidance before). It is puffed on the top and had some residue on the top as well, so I would suspect that is the problem. My question is to make sure the steps I take from here. I can go to Radio Shack and get a new cap, but I am no solder expert. Luckily for me, where I work has an electronics lab, so I can take the board in and get the new cap soldered on. Do I just unplug all of the connections, pull back the tabs that hold the board in, and remove the board? Is there anything I need to be careful to do or not to do? I plan to take a few pictures before removing the board and label the connectors/cables, so I can plug them back in correctly. Once the cap is replaced, I just put the board back in and replug in all the cables/connectors - then I am good to go (unless other issues exist, of course)? I appreciate any help, I just want to make sure I do this correctly, to get the TV fixed but also to make sure I don't mess something up.

Thanks.

Thank you for the advice. I acutally just finished replacing the cap on the board. I was not able to take the board into the lab at work, but borrowed a solder iron and brought it home with me tonight. I haven't soldered anything in the last 20 years, but a buddy at work gave me a 5 minute course on it. The first time I soldered the cap on, I didn't get a good connection and the TV would not turn on. So I read again on good solder techniques on the web, took the board out and soldered the cap on again. This time the connection looked like the others on the board, so I thought I had a good chance. I put the board back in, plugged in all of the connectors and the TV turns on just fine. I have only tried it on and off 3 times so far, but it has worked every time. So we'll have to see how it goes, but it is working for now.

    Thanks.

The swollen electrolytic cap dose indicate defect but, also may mean a run-away voltage from an open zener diode or shorted regulator which regulates voltage. With luck, replacing the cap may do it, but may not complete the needed remedy. If you are not proficient with soldering or PC board work, I would strongly suggest taking unit to qualified service for complete analysis and repair

My 27 inch GE(model # 1917787/27G7618) regular TV works well. However, occasionally the screen narrows to a thin line in the middle and the tv will not turn back on for at least an hour. Any suggestions or comments? thanks
