My calypso whirlpool is leaving leaving black marks on my clothes
Hi guys- My calypso whirlpool is leaving black marks on my clothes that don't wash out, and it squeeks when the basket is turning. I'm guessing it needs to be re-balanced??

sounds like you might have mold inbtween the tubs and its starting to wash loose and get on your clothes. try a washer cleaner like washer magic and see if that helps.
I can't solve your problem, but I can say I have the same problem. I think grease is getting past the seals and getting into the washing basket with the cloths. I have a repair guy coming tonight. Hopefully he will confirm and fix. My machine is 9 years old and never a problem..till now.
This could be a couple of things
1....oil from the transmission.
this is not common so lets leave this one
2.....the use of fabric softener causes greasy marks on clothing after a while
Fabric softener reacts with soap and can form a greasy jell. it can be yellow oily color or black.
You will know if you have been using fabric softener.
Stop using it straight away.
To clean oty the machine if it were mine I would put a packet of epson salts in with hot water and let the comp[lete cycly go.
Foe awhile use the machine with caution as this may release build up of grease which can stain further clothing until it is all gone.
The make and model of the washer is needed for an accurate diagnosis.
Run the washer empty with vinegar on the hottest, longest cycle. Usually this is caused from fabric softener and liquid detergent build up. Use powder detergent only and don't use cold water to wash in all the time. Only use cold water for your bright, finer cloths. Cold water use causes detergent build up.
I can assure you this IS a common problem. I can't tell you how many customers I have had in the past that complained about their Calypso's leaving the same marks on their clothing. The problem occurs because of the suction on the clothes as the washer extracts water from them during the final nunator cycle. The nunator is the wash plate that the clothes get caught in. The manufacturer's cure for this problem was to come up with a modified control board that reduces the final nunator time and minimizes the suction action on your clothing. The replacement control board part number is 8571359. I have ordered and installed this board on a few Calypso's. I'm surprised that nobody advised you of this in the past. If you call Whirpool back and they deny this, I got this information from them. It may be worth your while to contact them again to see if there is a recall on this and if they would cover the cost of the repairs.
I don't know of a "permanent" fix, but I do know that replacing the nunater (wash plate) may help. Especially, if the rubber around the edge is starting to crack or curl, creating areas where clothing can catch. This is a known problem with the Calypso. As I was instructed, the problem was attributed to an excessive nunator time at the end of the wash cycle. Such a vacuum was being generated that it was pulling clothing into the edges of the nunator, leaving rubber marks and/or clothes becoming lodged. The manufacturer modified the control board to reduce the nunator time to prevent this. I can provide you with a part number, but do not know if the manufacturer will cover the cost of replacment. If interested, let me know. Do you need advice on how to remove the nunator (wash plate)? Or, did my previous post explain this enough for you? Please post back if you require additional assistance.
to all that are having a problem with these calypso washers... if you have paid for a repair then you need to check out the lawsuit... calypsosettlement.com and see if it applies to you. but if you are getting a mark or a residue on your clothes, then look at the inner wash plate gasket, where it meets with the outer stainless steel tub. if there is a gap between the gasket and the tub then thats where the marks are coming from. it happens alot and thats not covered by the settlement, but its not too bad to replace the inner wash plate. you need to remove the cabinet, then the tub cover and the innerwash plate dome. then 6 screws and the cover will come off. replacing the inner wash plate will solve the stains and get you a few more years of use until you have to buy a new washer as more items may fail.
At the end of the cycle, the wash plate nutates for approximately 30 seconds to fluff the clothing after the final spin. The action of fluffing causes the outer wash plate seal to rub against the stainless steel basket while they are both relatively dry. This condition causes the gray discoloration. RESOLUTION: An updated machine control, part number 8542693, is now available. The updated control reduces the fluff time from 30 seconds to 8 seconds, allowing the clothing to be fluffed, without causing discoloration. Gray marks or smudges can be washed out of clothing after wiping down the basket. The consumer should use the recommended amount of HE detergent and the hottest water safe for the fabric or hand wash the garment under running water. In either case, the fabric must be cleaned prior to running through the dryer
