Have you tried installing the software from the CD on the PC you are transferring to? There is no drivers for fire-wire.You can buy a a IEEE 1394 firewire to USB 2.0 cable if you do not have a firewire connection on your PC. The software captures the video or still shots.
A firewire to USB will not work. It has to be firewire to firewire. A JVC GR-D240ek uses 4-pin, IEEE 1394 compliant Digital Video Connector [DV OUT] to connect a 1394 cable (also known as a FireWire or i.Link cable) to a laptop equipped with an equivalent IEEE 1394 port. Please note that some laptops firewire port could either be 4 pins or 6 pins.
Soon as that connection as shown above is established, you can use Windows Import Video to capture / download the videos.
Other notes (from the same Windows Help link above) :
You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Movie Maker. After you connect ... your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Movie Maker, turn on your DV camera, put it into playback mode, and Windows Import Video should open automatically.
You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Photo Gallery. After you connect ...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from Camera or Scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
You can also open Windows Import Video by using Windows Live Photo Gallery. (This options requires you to install Windows Live on your computer.) After you connect your...your DV camera, and your computer, start Windows Live Photo Gallery, turn on your DV camera, and put it into playback mode. In Windows Live Photo Gallery, click File, click Import from a camera or scanner, click your DV camera in the list of devices, click Import, and then follow the instructions.
Verify that the laptop's firewire port is 100% up to specs and totally compliant to IEEE 1394.
the usb cable is for the still images. if you want to transfer the videos you need a dv (firewire) cable. you need to check what type of connection your computer has if its a 4 or 6 pin connection. some computers dont have any. its usually labeled on the computer IEEE 1394 or just 1394. the camcorder has a 4 pin connection, so depending on computer you will need a 4-4 or 4-6 pin dv cable. then you can use windows movie maker to capture the video.
you can purchase a pci firewire card and install to your computer. Or if you video card supports an Svideo connection you could connect via an Svideo cable.
It should work. Laptops have a 4pin connection. There is a video on how to specifically connect digital cameras to laptops using 4pin to 4 pin IEEE 1394 cable. So it should work... The video is on www.HandBookLive.com under Electronics category. It doesn't cover the software because all softwares would be different, but you can see that it uses 4 pin to 4 pin. You can double check on this site though.
IEEE 1394 doesn't work like USB so it probably won't show up in devices. What you would do is go to a video editing/burning program and click on a capture video option. The program accesses the video camera and you can choose what video you wish to record onto your computer.
Use firewire connection(DV Port) and must use a good quality cable. Sub standard cable lead you to trouble. There's no Vista issue with this camcorder model, only at the software side, JVC website provide a list for those update is needed including upgrade link. I can not post the link this time since that was long time and i need to search for that again. Have search it on JVC site, i will give you an update as well. Good Luck, keep in touch
