Same thing here... "Rebuilding Database.. Do not turn off the system" it's stuck at 35% - I've watched the HDD accesslight and when it reaches 35% it goes out and then no more progress. I'm getting pissed about Sony's firmware update that probably caused this. I've been fine for over a year now and well - why should I pay to repair something that Sony caused? Has anyone else had this problem and repaired it yet? HOW?

  • Anonymous May 04, 2008

I have the exact same problem. I've restored the stupid thing like a billion times. From what i hear, GTA4 has been locking up the ps3s ( like what happened to mine ). But, of course, because it was their game that froze while loading, and then broke my hard disk, i have to pay for it. Tough luck huh?

  • Anonymous May 05, 2008

    try this http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support...

and down load the seagate discwizard. Now hook your hard drive to your PC with a usb 2.0 to sata/ide. The free software will recognize your hard disc. Now reformat. I fixed my ps3 hdd by doing this. Good Luck...

The Best way to fix a problem like this is to use a PS3 Repair Guide.

We have a new PS3 with 80gb drive (4weeks old) and am getting the message the the Hard Disk file system is corrupted. When you do the restore it goes through the process then takes you back to the same screen saying it is still corrupted. Is there anything that can be done short of returning it?

  • Anonymous Jan 20, 2009

I have same problem...I purchased my end of Nov 07 so I am 7 weeks past warranty....we used it very little when we first got it and then probably didn't use it at all for 4 or 5 months. Recently bought 2 new games so got it back out again and now it won't work.....Called Sony they will not warranty it even though I pointed out to them that I have found multiple sites on internet of customers stating they have had this problem. Sounds to me like it should be a recall situation.

This happened to my husbands PS3 also. He put it into another PS3 and reformatted it and then when he got home and put it back into his it asked him to reformat again and this did the trick. It's been working ever since. He called Sony and they wanted him to send back his hard drive and they would either fix or send him a "new" refurbished one for $150. I don't think so!!

I no a way to fix it hold the power button down until the system turns on and turns back back off then let the button go. Then hold the button down again it will beep once then beep twice quickly.
Then let it go. It will tell you to plug in the usb cord and connect the controller then press the ps button. After that a menu will pop up, click NUMBER 5 (It says restore ps3 system or something) agree with everything it says and you will have to reset the date and time and all that and then its fixed!

  • uuuuuuli Oct 23, 2010

how long does it take to restore? because after i clicked number 5, my screen turned black and the ps3 is still on.

  • Leon Kennedy Oct 27, 2010

Bro thank you sooooo much for that extremely useful tip and advice!!! I was told that my PS3 was trash, throw it away etc. etc. Not only that but I have the 60G PS3 and from what I understand that is the most sought after and expensive one , hence it plays PS2 games as well and the new models dont. Either way I am forever grateful and its nice to know there is still good, honest and intelligent people out there! Plus you know the saying what goes around comes around, and I am sure you have plenty of good Karma coming your way. Again God Bless and Take Care of yourself.

P.S. The only thing that really really hurts is that you lose all your Saved Data! And I had hundreds of hours logged in. However I would rather have my System and what the heck I get to re-do all my all time favorite games. Well got to go I have a lot of catching up and game playing to do.

    Respectfully,
    T.K.

    Thanks
    T.K.

Tried and tested, and still doesn't work.

I've attempted this many times, however it will still eventually come up with the whole "Your filesystem is corrupt and must be restored" thing.
There are other messages too, including something to do with having to reformat my HDD.
I've swapped hard drives at least 3 times now to try and prevent this, but it still seems to occur.

Been going on for almost 2 years now... I haven't been able to feel 'at home' with my console, since my first one YLOD'd on me.

The error ecurs when u switch off your system whilst the hdd drive is saving information. the solution is:
① Verify that the power indicator on the PS3 system is solid red, and then turn off the MAIN POWER switch.
② Turn on the MAIN POWER switch, then touch and hold the power button.
③ Keep touching the power button even after you hear a short beep after 5 seconds.
④ After 10 seconds, you will hear another short beep and the system will shut down (release the button at this point).
⑤ Touch and hold the power button again.
⑥ Continue touching the power button even after you hear a short beep after 5 seconds.
⑦ Release the button when two short beeps are emitted after 7 seconds.
⑧ As instructed by the on-screen message, plug in the ps controller and press the ps button, then select restore ps3 system.

bobs your uncle , ur ps3 is working but it will start from scratch, sorry :( thank megan :)

The time it takes on these options depend on a lot of things. The bigger the hard drive the longer it takes a 500 gig can take up to three days also depends on how much data is corrupted.the data rebuild depends on how much datas on the ps3

It's simple. I fixed it by taking the hd out and (optional) air spraying it. I then slid it in and turned my PS3 back on. After that it came up with the disk error, so I pulled the hd back out and started the recovery thing like normal. Here is the real fixer: a screen should pop up asking you if you want to format the hd, say yes both times. When it begins to do it, slide the hd back in and let it format. Then simply restart or let it restart and your set. It should boot up as normal.

This morning, my PS3 had the same problem. No matter how many times you try and restore the hard disk, it just asks you to do it again and again. I tried many of the solutions posted on this website, but none of them worked for me. I was still left with the frustrating message of "your hard disk's system file is corrupted and will restore". I thought I was going to have to contact Sony and get them to repair it for some ridiculous amount of money or worse, buy a new PS3. Thankfully, whilst desperately searching youtube for the solution I came across the following video. If like me, all other solutions (like removing your hard disk) failed then watch this video.

It shows you how to access Sony's Hidden/Secret Playstation 3 Recovery Mode. It is easy to unlock and all you will need is a broken PS3 and your fingers to press the on/off button. Hope this works!

This is what got me to, a lotta people said that with an aftermarket hd that everything takes for ever. It sat for a day and ahalf updateing at 99%. Finally just shut it down and it worked with errors, then they fixed them selves now this. I think it may just be incompatable hds? Ps4 out tommarow.

To restore a bricked or frozen PS3:
CAUTION this method works but reformats HD with data loss.
-Turn off power completely using switch on the back of unit
-Wait 1 minute
-Turn power switch back on
-Place and hold a finger on the front on/off switch
-Wait until you hear 2 beeps
-Take finger off
-Place and hold finger again until you hear 3 quick beeps
-Black screen will appear
-Plug in controller using usb wire
-Follow prompts to boot file
-Click down to restore PS3 system
-Click yes
This will unfreeze the unit but you will lose all your saved data.

1: Get hard drive ready to remove from ps3.
2: Turn system on.
3: When it ask you to restore hard drive go-a-head and click ok.
4: Very quickly remove hard drive from system. You want to do this when progress is at 0%.
5:Reinstall hard drive then a screen will pop up telling you to reformat do so. Don't touch it it will reboot by it self.

This work well for me with no problems. All saved info will be lost and system will be restored back to factory setting.

Our hard drive froze and we got an error message "file system corrupted". It would nor reformat. After reading the solutions here, we first removed the hard drive but that did not work because we simply got a "hard drive missing" error. So the key is to START the console, then remove the HARD DRIVE, then wait for the RE-FORMAT instructions. This worked like a charm and we're really grateful since we only had it for 2 weeks. Turns out our grandson had downloaded some of the stuff from his PSP and that might have caused the problem. We will be very cautious after this experience but I am very happy that we were able to avoid the expense of getting it fixed as I'm reading about.

I just did this now and it works, only catch is that you'll lose all ur data, start the PS3, remove the hard disk and start the restore, it will then ask u to format the disk, reinsert it, then format, and voila, it works, I just did it, and it worked well.

"The hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored"??

Here's what to do - as instructed by Sony UK (Tel: 0844 736 0595):

If you've tried `restoring` and it continues to reset/repeat to the same message:
Turn the console off by holding/pressing the power button down until you hear three spaced out beeps (before powering down);
Then hold in the power button again until you eventually hear a first and second beep - followed by a quick double beep, then take your finger off the button;
This should bring up a six option menu, such as `System Restore` etc;
Select `System Restore` and follow the instructions;
If in the event it repeats your first problem, i.e. repeating the same message, then repeat the above process to get back to the six options, although this time select `System Reset` or similar;
This will sort your problem although you will probably lose saved game data (if not backed up on a memory stick or something prior to your problem).
If you play Modern Warfare 2 online, then your data will be saved on the Sony Server anyhow and won't be lost.

Whencarying out the above actions, the loading bar can be a bit slow at times. This is due to repairing the corrupted data etc on your ard-drive.

This worked 100% for me and I've no doubts will also help you.

Any problems please ensure you contact Sony on the number above.

Good Luck!!

Ok, my playstation is telling me that the my hard disk and corrupt ect, and needs to be restored... now i talked to a guy at my local eb shop, he said to get a normal laptop hdd and swap it with the ps3 one.
now, i'm stingy with buying things, and i get lost when people are talking about formating, I can't even get out of the stupid "restore page" (whats the point of having a a restore operation if it does "naughty word" all)...This is driven me insane ...I'm starting to look at my pet rock as the best answer and just hit the damm thing, but that isn't under warrenty.
Is there any way that i would fix it my self with a step by step instruction thingy...or maybe its one of those things where you take it apart and put it together?,

so can anyone tell me how i could possably fix this "little" problem before i resort to my 10 kg pet rock?

btw, is there any chance that i could get compensation from sony? I mean, they did sell me a product tht fails to work...

If you have a corrupted hard drive then unfortunately your saved data is probably lost; however, there are still a few things you can try to do in order to salvage your hard drive before you give up and go get a new one or a replacement console.

Here are a few things you can try that might work for you:

  1. Put your corrupted hard drive in a different PS3 console, then reformat your drive, then place it back in your console. You will then probably be prompted to reformat the drive again in your own console. This should then fix the problem.
  2. Power down your PS3, remove the hard drive, then power on your console. It will ask for a hard drive to be inserted for formatting. Do this now.
  3. If all else fails you can actually format using a laptop, or an external 2.5" hard drive enclosure that connects via USB. This is a bit more complicated however.
I've put together a comprehensive and free list with detailed instructions on everything you can try to repair a corrupted hard drive. You'll find it at my Sony PS3 repair guide page (scroll down a bit to find it)

  • Abz_007 Dec 26, 2010

For anyone who has tried to restore using sony's secret restore mode but get stuck at the point where pressing start on the controller does not bring up any restore options, carryout step 2 suggested in solution 15! this reformats the hard drive and the ps3 is back up and running!

Always first try the "Restore File System" option after you hold the power button. This will NOT erase your saves. It may fix the problem for you. However, it doesn't for everyone. The "Restore PS3" choice should be your LAST choice because it will erase everything.

This is what i did, and it worked, i have the 320gb hdd for my ps3, and i switched it off (hard switch off in the back ) while it was saving, an when i returned later that night, it wouldnt get pass the ps3 logo, so, all i did was put my hdd in my friends ps3, and sincce it did not recognize the hdd, it forced it to completely reformat after this, just reinsurt it into your own ps3 and it will reformat again since your ps3 wont recognize it either, but, if you can get into your files b4 u do this, please be smart and backup all the saves u can, i didnt have this option, an now i have alot of work to do

Hi all,
The PS3 uses SATA hdd and not the std IDE hdd that almost all PCs use these days. So If you haven't the patient and want to avoid wasting money for a SATA caddy that costs £20+ to interface to a PC then I propose you review the video on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZWye1CLTVo&feature=player_embedded

It unravels some key secrets of the PS3 even reformatting the hdd as a last resort.

A few days my ps3 passed by the same error, i fixed it so easily, bad thing was the hd is deleted, but now my ps3 works perfectly. Here are some steps: Turn off power completely using switch on the back of unit ( for slim ps3's disconnect the power cable and follow the same instructions)
-Wait 1 to 2 minutes.
-Turn power switch back on
-Place and hold a finger on the front on/off switch
-Wait until you hear 2 beeps
-Take finger off
-Place and hold finger again until you hear 3 quick beeps
-Black screen will appear, it will ask you to plug controller using wire, plug it.
-Follow prompts to boot file
-Click down to restore PS3 system, click yes

For reference I put this walk through together to format the hard drive on your computer if needed. I have found that in some cases where you needed to do this because a quick format that the PS3 does is not completely fixing the issue.

I went down and purchased a 200 gig hitashi sat HD, installed it and right away my ps3 picked it up loaded the oper. programs and been running great eversince. The reason that happened is due to early termination of the console while it's save data to the HD' make sure NOT to turn the system off until it's completed this task and the red light has stopped blinking. Sometime we get in a hurry and just shut down the system right after the game, but it's better just to walk away and leave it on so the system can finish saving. If you go into setup, U can set up your system to shutdown after so long automaticly, energysaving mode.

#25 on the list hit this one on the nose, followed those directions to a t!My hubby is no longer sulking, although he was not able to save any of his old information and might not get over that for a while. His ps3 is now back up and running and capable, thus far no problems. Just went through the steps, made sure red light on on ps3, held down power buttons one beep, second beep, then a beepbeep, two in a row, and it started giving commands to get to the restore menu, choose restore ps3 system and you reset all the settings to english and time zone and you back up and running, no sony call, no sending it back, no changing the hdd.

I no how 2 fix this!! it happend 2 me 2day on my ps3 60gb PAL this is what i did...
1) take ur HDD out (this does not void the playstation warenty).
2) plug it back in and try an turn it on and format it.
3) if it comes up with the message again then remove it again and this time put a tiny bit of 3 in 1 oil onto a tissue and then clean/lubricate the bit that connects the ps3(electronic connection) worked grate for me i could get onto the ps3 main menu and do stuff its just it kept freezing at most things.
4) so i then backed up my data onto a memory stick pro duo and did a full system format on the ps3.

Hope it helps =D =D

SOURCE: My PS3's hard disk file system is corrupted

There is an alternate way to restore your HDD. Turn off your system and when u see the red light, hold the power button in front until you hear a total of 4 beeps (1 alone, 1 alone, 2 together). It usually works on second try. it should show a screen and say hook up controller with a usb cord. Then it should show i think 6 options. Choose the restore option. it should work.

Hope it works and wish you all the best!
P.S.- I just got the 80010514 error on my ps3 and my ps3 games dont work anymore :(

SOURCE: My PS3's hard disk file system is corrupted

This is happening because your console is not recognizing the HDD (hard drive) for what ever reason. The corrupted files are about to do damage to your console, and a PS3 will not turn on if it thinks further damage will occur. Here are two things you can do;
1. Try accessing the HDD reset menu. Here's how you do this: With a solid red light showing, hold down both the power & eject buttons. You're going to hear a single beep, then a double beep. Once you hear the double beep, release both buttons. You'll get a message on your TV saying "connect your controller using USB". Following all the instructions will lead you to a 6 item menu. You are going to choose number 3. If that option doesn't work, pick number 6. BE WARNED!!! Number 6 will delete ALL of your saved memory! I know that really sucks, but this may be the only way to save your console short of repair. You can "back-up" your saved data using a "USB storage device" Like a memory stick or even your iPod.
If none of this works, or the console just won't let you do the "double button" thing, it'll need to be repaired. You can contact PSR repairs at www.psr1.com. They are really great! They do both warranty & non-warranty repair work for a very decent price. I hope I helped. Good luck, Indra!

Most likely your hard drive is completely corrupted. It could be as simple as a new Hard Drive replacement or as complicated as a motherboard issue.

"the hard disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored"

Ok, it appears that your hard drive in your PS3 is corrupt and needs to be reformatted. You can get an external hard drive enclosure and do it yourself. You would have to take the hard drive out of your PS3 and put it in the external hard drive enclosure and plug that into a computer with the supplied USB cable and format it. From what I'm reading out there, the external hard drive enclosure has to be for SATA 2.5" hard drive.             You could probably replace the hard drive with a larger one just as easy if you wanted to. If you don't feel comfortable with any of this, then its probably repair shop time. I hope this helps.moreover,,Use your recovery disc to reinstall your operating system. This should clean up your hard drive and restore any missing or corrupt files.
