There are multiple LAN drivers available for that model from Acer. Make sure you download all of them for the specific OS and try each one. I note that the only operating systems they have drivers for are Windows XP 32bit, XP MCE 32bit and Vista 32bit. Make sure to also download and install the chipset driver.
Visit Acer Official Support for Acer Aspire 3690 Notebook. All Drivers are available here for Windows XP. Download the correct drivers according to the Ethernet/LAN Card you have in your PC.

http://support.acer-euro.com/index.html here you can download all drivers you need. For Ethernet you find the driver in youc PC manually in features of Driver Ethernet. I cannot say the way exactly because I have Czech PC.
