Would like to replace the chuck on my 14.4 cordless dewalt drill with a 1/2" how do I remove the old one?

If the drill is not too old, I would take it to your nearest factory dewalt repair shop. they have a good warranty on their items. If it is older you probably need to replace the chuck itself. You need to remove the plastic to get the chuck open and then there is a screw down inside the chuck that needs removed. The chuck should come right off and just reverse the process to install the new one.

Look at eReplacementParts.com and the parts diagrams.

open the chuck fully and it shoudl have a screw inside. Unscrew it, but be carefull, these screws are usually reversed - to uncsrew, rotate it clockwise. Once done, put allen key into chuck (short side in), fasten the chuck to hold allen key well and hit the key with hammer - counterclockwise direction. You might want to verify this procedure with someone else as I have no experience with Dewalt, but this way it works for Makita, Metabo, Narex, ... then why not for Dewalt? Juraj

Open chuck all the way (like for a large drill bit). There should be a set screw at the bottom (where you would put a drill bit). Don't turn too hard - it may be a left handed screw (I don't remember if it is a lefty for sure but try gently each way then with a bit more force each way until it moves).

233804-40 also you can't use a generic replacement chuck. As of 2/2/2010 the prices on the Dewaltservicenet web site are $72.74 for
the tool and $69.70 for the chuck, part # 330075-90.

Step 1. This step loosens the screw inside the chuck. Open the chuck all the way — if you see a screw inside, it’ll need to come out before you can remove the chuck. If there’s no screw inside, you can skip steps one and two.

Step 2. If there’s a screw inside the chuck, typically the threading will be left-handed, so turn it clockwise to remove it. Be careful, and use the right size screwdriver — you don’t want to strip the screw.
Step 3. Insert the largest hex key that you have into the chuck, short-side-in, and tighten the chuck. Tap the hex key sharply in a counterclockwise direction to loosen the chuck. Now you can remove it by hand.
This won’t work for every consumer drill ever made, but pretty close. Most drills will match one of two common chuck-threading standards: 3/8′-24 threaded mount for 3/8′-capacity drill chucks, and 1/2′-20 threaded mount for 1/2′-capacity drill chucks — but on some drills just the opposite may occur. To be safe, always check the thread count before you buy a replacement drill chuck.

I just changed the chuck on my 18 volt xrp half inch hammer drill,yes first you must remove the torx screw with #15 torx bit,note this is a left handed thread screw,knowing the bad chuck was bad I added some heat from a propane torch to the chuck then making sure it was in 1st gear i took some vise grips and the chuck is screwed on with normal right handed threads,it broke loose (was stubborn but needs a lot of torque )ahhhhhh wat a pain.

this 2 chuck are 3/8 jaw opening,double sleeve u can hold the chuck will opening it at the sametime.the sinlge sleeve u have to runs the drill while running slow rev/for to remove the bit etc.
i prefer metal sleeve.

you need a special jig to remove the chuck on this kind of drill
