My garage door sometimes gets stuck and then goes

My Craftsman Chain garage door opener is giving me some problems lately. Sometimes the garage door gets stuck and then goes back down. Or it looks like the chain is bouncing and then gets stuck and goes back down. Any ideas? Should I tighten the bolt that connects the chain?

It's weird that the garage door goes back down after the chain bounces. Mine has a similar issue, except it goes down all the way and then lifts back up and won't stay on the ground. I have to close it manually. Maybe it would be best for both of us to hire a garage door repair service to see if they can fix it. http://www.allamerican-garagedoor.com

Don't tighten the chain. It sounds like you have either a broken door spring or the drive gear in the motor unit is going bad. Release the opener from the door and operate it by hand. It should be easy enough to raise that your wife can do it with no problems and it should stay put when released about waist to shoulder high.

IT JUST STARTED TO ACT UP. i WILL START TO GO UP 1 FT AND STOP AND YOU PUSH THE BUTTON AGAIN AND IT GOES DOWN. tHEN YOU TRY AGAIN, SOMETIMES 2-3 TIMES.

Un-hook the chain from the door, and see how hard it is to raise the door. It should be easy, not hard. If it's hard to open by hand, the opener won't do it, and will stop. You can adjust the springs to counterbalance the door so it's easy for the motor to lift it. You may need new springs.

As Ray stated change your battery and clean the contacts and the button with some alcohol. Check and make sure it works with your wall switch. Lastly the receiver in the opener could be going bad.

It sounds like the door is traveling too far in the down direction. When it hits the floor the safety causes it to reverse to the open position. You need to adjust the 'down limit' not the force.

My older Craftsman garage door opener comes down about 6" & then goes back up. I just replaced all the rollers o& the opener worked fine. Then I tightened the chain on the opener & it worked ok...

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door goes back up it is a door sensor problem. You chain should sag just a little. If you tighten it too much it will click as it goes over the sprocket. You can increase the down force which is an adjustment near where all those white wires go. A 1/4 turn should be enough. Release the door from the opener and operate it by hand. It should move freely and when you have the door approximately waist high it should stay put. Neither raising nor closing.

I have worked on a few garage door operners. Sometimes the solder breaks where the metal maked contact. Could have it checked or may need a replacement from Sears.

Partial opening/closing

COULD BE A BROKEN WIRE.
THE POWERHEAD BEING LOOSE MAY HAVE CAUSED ONE TO BREAK THEY ARE VERY SMALL AND BREAK EASILY.
CHECK BY MOVING THE WIRES SLIGHTLY AND SEE IF THE WALL BUTTON LIGHT GOES OFF AND ON.
HOPE THIS HELPS
