Tip & How-To about Computers & Internet

Preventive Virus Removal Procedures

There may be some of you that have never thought about the power of User Accounts. User Accounts is a Graphic User Interface that has options to create new user accounts. Even though you are the only person using your computer, this is a good feature to setup.
The reason you want to setup this feature is because it can be used to backdoor a virus that has taken control of your account.
Here are the steps to setup User Accounts:
Click the Windows Logo
Click Control Panel
Navigate and click on User Accounts
Click on Turn User Account On and Off
Click Continue
Check Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer
Press Ok
Click Manage Another Account
Click Continue
Click Create a New Account
In the box type Administrator for a user name.
Select Administrator as the account type
Click Create Account
Click on the Administrator account
Click Change the Password
Create a password with one capital letter, one number, one special character and at least 7 characters long.
Keep that password in a safe place.

Reasoning: Each person who logs on to a computer has a profile, this profile is associated to that persons account. A profile is generically in a path like c:/users/ACCOUNT NAME/documents and settings/my documents. If a virus takes over this profile you will not be able to use Internet Explorer or any program like a virus remover application.
This is why you create another account.
When you logon with your Administrator account you will be able to access Internet Explorer and the virus remover software.
MalwareBytes has been proven to be an affective virus removal application, that is currently free as well.

Startup problem

It all depends on which operating system you have
Reboot your computer. Press the "F8" key as it boots up, and continue pressing it until the Advanced Boot Options screen appears. Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode with Command Prompt" and press "Enter" to bring up a screen similar to this. Windows Advanced Options Menu Please select an option: Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode

Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice Type "exit" and press "Enter" when you're done to reboot the computer again and return to the normal Vista interface.

Click start Control Panel. Select "User Accounts and Family Safety," then "User Accounts." Click "Turn User Account Control on or off." Remove the check mark next to "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer." Click "OK." Set All Accounts to Administrator Still in the UAC section of Control Panel, select "Manage another account," and click on a user account. Click on "Change the account type." When working with multiple accounts, some changes can only be made if you and the account holder are both logged in with "Administrator" accounts so you need to change all user accounts to "Administrator." When you are done making changes, you can change them back to "Standard," but always leave at least one "Administrator" account.
