New (old) N50 ML-4749

Hi,
I just bought the above mixer and would like to rehab it.  Mechanically, I'm very proficient but I have seen the asinine Hobart policy regarding sales of technical manuals.  Given that limitation, can you assist me with teardown, lube, and reassembly?
Thanks, Tom

You should be able to purchase the manual. I know that Hobart abandoned that policy a few years back -- unless they re-instated it. Call Mother Hobart and ask. 937-332-3000

There is a few tricks to these units, it would be tough to convey here. But here goes...

Remove back cover. Loosen 6 or 7 screws around outside of motor windings. Thump the nose of the mixer downward to break the seal. Watch for spacer washers where shafts go into motor case. Remove spring. Remove idler. Remove shifting guide. Remove gear assy. Leave beveled gears in place if possible. Clean. Use Darina II grease. (20 oz) Clean and permatex "seal". Tighten mounting bolts. Adjust set screw at back of planetary. (Double set screw. The first one is to lock the adjustment.) Test in 1st and then 3rd while turning the set screw. You just make it quiet for a proper adjustment.

Good luck -- Mike

I have an old Hobart 5 quart N50 mixer (4749). There is a phenolic gear which is driven by the gear on the motor shaft, and this gear is starting to delaminate at some tooth edges (about 1/8"). ...

The gear has not really changed. It is a fail-safe gear designed to break before the motor is damaged by the transmission being jammed.

As to whether it will last, I can't say. I know of no other sources for the gear other than keeping a watch of Ebay.

Hobart N50 stator assembly replacement

You can go to www.hobartservice.com. select parts and type the machine ML number from the data plate. here are 5 different ML options, otherwise I would have given you the part number.
It will open an exploded view of YOUR machine's build, complete with part numbers.
You can then call your nearest Hobart dealer for a cost and availability. They are still a current model, and for their size, an excellent mixer worth repairing.

Which kenwood mixer to buy?

Hi. Congratulations for researching mixers. I wish I had before I bought my Kitchenaid HD Pro. All mixer manufacturers over-rate their products. Goto www.consumeraffairs.com and do a search for each mixer you are considering. Most mixer failures are caused by mixing heavy cookie or bread doughs. Although manufacturers claim that their mixers can easily handle these doughs...They cannot! My Kitchenaid self-destructed after 30 batches of bread dough. "For the way it's made"! Indeed! I solved my problem by buying a Hobart N50 mixer. It's a 5qt. and handles anything I throw into the bowl. I bought mine used, and refurbished it myself. New these units cost $2,035.00 USD.

If this solution has assisted you, please rate it. Good luck! ricardok45.

Noisy Hobart N50 Mixer

First, there is a double set screw (one on top of the other - if they are both there) towards the back of the planetary.

Remove the first screw, it should have a normal tip, not pointy. Run the mixer in 1st and adjust the screw, first out then in. Then repeat in 3rd. You should clearly hear a difference.

If not, you probably need to repack the grease in the transmission. The proper grease is called "Darina II". It's expensive ~ $35 per mixer.
