If memory serves, Stihl recommends a 50 to 1 mix ratio on the gas mixture...( 2.6 oz oil to 1 gal fuel ) I usually run mine just a smidge richer and run a mix of 45 to 1... ( 2.8 oz oil to 1 gal of fuel ) I also add about 1/2 oz of "Stabil" fuel stabilizer to the mix (holds down gumming of the fuel and keeps things running sweet)...hope this helps... ;-D

My Stihl FS 36 will start but dies after few seconds. Have cleaned in-tank filter; replaced diaphragm but same problem exists. Could be tank breather but awkward to get at. Seems a fuel starve issue?

Hello Bob Breedon,

Big fan of STIHL... Check Fuel 50:1 mix ratio...!!
See owners manual:
Stihl FS 36 Instruction Manual Page 18

A very common mistake... is to use GASOLINE... and
forge to put in the 2-cycle oil...

As soon as the unit heats up... It will stop
(seize - in fact)...

Been there (forgot about that)

Need to know the oil to gas ratio for a 056 stihl chainsaw?

Stihl chainsaws are 1:50 oil to gas ratio. Make sure you use good high-quality 2-stroke oil, preferably that which is made by Stihl.

Does 2 cycle oil get mixed with gas on McCulloch chainsaw or just put gas in?

Fuel/Oil Mixture
  1. Use a quality 2 cycle oil and mix it to the OIL supplier's recommended ratio. Today I use Stihl 2 cycle oil mixed @ 50:1 in a Pioneer that I purchased new in 1980. There are no gouges or scratches on the piston or cylinder and I have no carbon build up on the piston top. The manual (on stone tablets) recommends 24:1. Over the years the mixture has leaned from 24:1 (Saw Recommendation) to 28:1 (Lawn boy mower recommendation) to 32:1 (Oil provider 8oz/2gal - used for many years) and finally the last 5 (±) years 50:1 (Stihl 2.6oz/1gal)
  2. Any fuel containing ethanol is not good with chainsaws. Mix what you expect to use within a few months. Anything over 6 months old use up in a 4 cycle engine. HTH

Use a quality 2 cycle oil and mix it to the oil manufacturer's recommended ratio. Today it is usually 50:1.
Fuel in the USA contains ethanol; try to use up your mix in a month or less. HTH

My fs 45 whipper snipper is starting but running

I have a Stihl FS 45 and have had problems with it running for a short time then cutting out. The problem is like to be either- the filter attached to end end of the fuel pick hose that goes down into the fuel tank is blocked or- there is a crackor split in the corrugated section of the fuel pick up hose between the fuel tank and the carburettor. If such a crack or split exists it will cause air to be sucked in with the fuel upsetting the fuel/air ratio. A new hose not adjustment is the only cure
