This is from your description a convergence problem, you set uses two of the STK-392-110 convergence chips.

Both chips (about 14 for a pair on EBAY) and any protect resistors (right next to the chips and easy to test) and total parts cost would be well under 30 dollars.

if you or someone you know is able (I can tell you what you will need and how to get at the parts that will need to be replaced) I will assist you---a lot cheaper to fix it than replace it.

Let me know by commenting here if you need assistance or have questions. If this has told you something you did not know rate this solution "very helpful" as I do this here for free.

KP-51HW40 Sony 51" Fades to blue screen

The service manual on page 8 shows how to adjust the Red/Blue/Green screen voltages. To get to the adjustment board, take the front speaker grill off (two screws at the bottom left and right) and set it aside. No need to disconnect any wires. Then remove the plywood board with 4 screws that exposes the screen/focus adjustments. The top 3 adjustments are for focus, and you need not mess with these. The bottom 3 adjustments are for Red/Blue/Green screen voltage rough adjustments. My screen showed red lines, so I had to turn the bottom right adjustment with a philips head screwdriver just slightly until the red gun retrace lines where no longer visible.

Red green and blue lines

Most projection TVs have an option to refocus. For example, my Sony rear projection TV has a button on the front for focusing the lamps. Try finding this button or option in the menus with your remote. Projection TVs actually use three lamps, one red, one green and one blue. These need to line up exactly in order to form a good picture, and when they come out of focus, you see the edges which sometimes has the effect of a 3D image when you aren't wearing 3D glasses. Hope this helps!

57" 2003 sony non-xbr projextion

there's a lot of talk in the internet that the pots in the front of the tv will take these (horizontal?) lines out . i have the kp-57hw40, and there is a web site with pictures on making the adjustment. i believe the bottom 3 pots are blue, green, red going from left to right. mark the pots first so you know where you started, and they say it takes just a hair adjustment counter clockwise to remove the lines. Only go to the point the lines disappear. web site shows how to get front cover off via two screws hidden in bottom and then take off the cardboard cover to get at pots. Not to be smart, but don't be careless, keep hands out since there are high voltage circuits just inside there. . . .
