My ps3 turns on and shows the wavy background for the home menu screen but no menu icons show up. Nothing on the controller changes anything and icons never come up. The wavy colored background is there though

This problem is because your PS3 software has become corrupt. The following steps will cure the problem but you will lose saved games and all other data. Your trophies will not be affected as these are stored by the Playstation Network.
Step 1. Turn your PS3 onto standby (Red light on)
Step 2. Press and hold the power button. It will beep as soon as you press it, beep 5 seconds later then beep once more 5 seconds later and then turn back to standby. Release the power button.
Step 3. Press and hold the power button again. It will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later and then beep twice quickly. Let go of the power button as soon as you hear these two beeps.
Step 4. The PS3 will start up asking you to plug in a controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Do this and it will boot into the recovery menu.
Step 5. Choose option 5 (Restore PS3 system). This will re-install the PS3 software and restart the console.
Step 6. When the PS3 restarts you will be asked to enter the time and date and other information. When the setup is complete your PS3 will boot into the home menu normally.

Hope this helps

Sounds like a processor error. Try CPR in NYC. They usually have a 1-3 day turnaround time, and are pretty cost effective. You can easily ship them your unit. They repair playstations, xboxes, etc. Fast and cheaper than the manufacturer.
website is www.cpr-nyc.com

Home screen shows only backround. No icons

Switch the PS3 off (Red Light). Hold your finger on the power button until the PS3 switches on and off. Take your finger off and hold it in again. It will come on. Hold it until you hear a double beep and take it off immediately. You will then be taken into a recovery menu. It will ask you to connect your controller via USB. Choose option 3 - Restore File System (Do not try any other option as it will erase some or all data on your HDD). It should work after this.

Hope it helps you.

When i turn on my ps3 to choose a user it doesnt show any of the users i have, so obvioulsy i cant do anything on my ps3. All it shows is the wavy background, Help me pleaseeee!

Try doing a master reset of your system.
1.) Turn off the hard switch on the back of your system and wait 30 seconds.
2.) Turn the hard switch back on so that the PS3 displays the red "stand by" light on the front LED.
3.) Hold your finger on the soft "on switch" (above the red LED) for about 10 seconds until the PS3 emits a beep.
Good Luck!

My ps3 doesn't show any of the Icons

Yea, i've called sony quite a few times myself and got no help.

You can use the 'new' feature they added. Turn on your PS3 and hold the power button till you hear two beeps, then release. Its a recovery menu you can use to try and fix it. If that doesnt work you may have to send it in for repairs, The menu only works on firmware 2.50 and up.
