Hp pl4260n had a very loud cracking sound (like high voltage) and the brightness and contrast is very low. Sound is ok, and picture is still there. I tried to adjust brightness and contrast via remote control but it doesn't select the functions.

Try adjusting the controls for brightness or contrast. If this does not work, the voltages on the back of the CRT needs to be checked. This has to be done by a skilled technician. Do not attempt repair if you are not familiar. There are very high voltages on the back of the CRT which may mean your life.
I have the same problem with my HP PL4260N 42" Plasma HDTV serial # CNH6141988, model # CPTOH-0602. I have perfect sound and can change channels still with sound but NO PICTURE. I am a consumer with a question that need the advise of an expert.
Hi, I have just experienced the exact same loud pop sound. Then no picture or sound. Just died. Spoke with a rep at HP and was told that this (having owned for 4 years) is out of warranty and the "main board" has died. It will cost $629.00 plus tax to repair. This would provide a 90 day warranty on those parts replaced. It's about the same to buy a new tv! So I am throwing this JUNK away and will never buy HP again. Best of luck to you all!
Hi,
Since sound is ok but there is no picture, you should try the following:
1) check whether brightness & contrast controls are adjusted properly. If necessary increase level of these controls.
2) If brightness & contrast are ok and even then there is no picture then most probably, there is fault in the horizontal supply circuitry which drives picture tube and is responsible for picture to appear on the screen. you will have to take the TV to service center.
Good luck and Good day.
Rating the solution is appreciated please.
Check filament voltage on tube, or at the back you should see some glow in the inside of it. Or check first your adjustment settings. Like contrast and brightness setting set it to high.
If you doesn't have any knowledge on electronics bring it to a shop, nasty live voltages might caught you.
Join our group. We all have the same problems with this TV. HP sold it with a faulty board. We the consumers are taking action. Contact us at: [email protected]
TV's use high voltage to generate the stream of electrons traveling
across the picture tube hitting the screen and lighting it up (thus the
name Cathode Ray Tube). It takes about 25,000 volts to do
this. In normal air, it takes about 1000 volts to jump an inch of
air, so the high voltage transformer needs to have good
insulation. It generates the voltage through a technique of
charging the transformer's magnetic field with a low voltage of about
140 volts then letting it go where upon it flys back out the high
voltage side at much high levels (Thus the common name
flyback). A most common failure in a CRT type TV is for the
insulation to crack in this transformer which is a unique component for
each model of TV and leak out the current overstressing the circuit
driving it. You can liken it to a little bolt of lightning
getting loose in the circuit and has the same sound on a smaller scale.
It would be well to replace your flyback transformer before it gets
worse and blows up something else as well. Best done by a
professional used to handling high voltage. The picture tube can
retain voltage even when the TV is unplugged for some time, and
replacing the anode lead (the big red one) can be dangerous.
