SOURCE: tired old Dewalt dw056 impact driver

It's not a simple project, and should only be done by someone who is an electrical technician. But, you can save money by repairing your old battery pack yourself.

If you look at the battery pack it might be screwed together (my 18 volt impact driver is). Inside you will find a series of batteries linked together by tabs. You can go to Ebay and find a supplier of these batteries. After your batteries come, you can replace the batteries in the same configuration as they were before. Dispose of your old batteries in a manner suitable for hazardous materials.
This process will cost you less than buying a new battery pack.

You can also do this with computer batteries. I found one of my computers only had two dead batteries out of eight. The cost to replace them was about $15, a lot less than a replacement battery for around $100. Just make sure you use the same batteries to replace the others, and use all other precautions. Again, don't do this if you are not an electrical technician.

It can be fixed, you just need a new switch. I can not find a Dewalt model number DW056 so I'm not sure what switch you need. The DW053 and DW055 use the same switch, part number N034934. A DW057 uses either part number 152274-15 or 152274-23 which is a variable speed switch. Make sure which model you have and which switch you need, Dewalt switches are expensive, most are $50 and up, and it's hard to return electronic parts to most parts distributors.

SOURCE: can you change just the

No, the brushes are part of the motor and pinion, Dewalt part number 607990-03. If you search "dewalt 607990-03" you can find several on-line vendors that sell the motor. They run about $50 plus shipping.

I have a DeWalt DW927 cordless drill. It's lost

the brush assembly slides out of the back of the motor. I suggest going to Dewaltservicenet.com and downloading a breakdown for this tool before starting. I don't think that the brushes are going to be your only problem though.
