My 2 year old JVC LT-37DS6FJ does not reliably switch on (often switches on briefly then switches off).
The digital picture crashes( goes black) , and the only effective cure seems to be to switch of at the mains and restart. The instruction manual's restart advice to simultaneously hold down TV/AV and Menu/OK does not always work.

Sounds to me like the digital pixeling that occurs with a weak signal. You have not identified whether this happens on broadcast/antenna TV, cable or satellite service, or a video input such as a DVD. This can be a common problem if you have a weak signal on any of those inputs. In any case, blowing out the dust will not help.
Hi , I have the same problem with my LT-42X688,so i called the service of my extended warranty provider . the TV technician just left and told me the motherboard is the problem. he said its the third one this week he has seen with the same symptoms. he ordered the motherboard and i've got to wait 5 to 7 work days before the part will be in . I will keep you posted when the guy will return.
capacitors are most likely to blame here, there are several that most likely are on the power board and are blown if you get them replaced the tv will function normally, the heat can come from the transformer since it is not getting smooth power from the capacitors. it is working very hard to dump the spikes in the electricity. I ups backup power supply rated for the tv's wattage will help smooth power and protect your investment.
Anytime an LCD has a shade of pink, that means the CCFL lamps are about to go out. Now that you have a black screen, I'd say you just need some new bulbs.
